Why Google CEO's Twitter Diss Is All Wrong |
03/04/09
I, like Owen and many of the "Shut Up, Twitter" readers, dismissed it as a pointless exercise in vanity. Who the hell cares "what are you doing?" at any given moment.
But I'm guessing that many of these opinions are outdated: Twitter has evolved from a basic exercise in meal-and-exercise-regime-broadcasting to sharing of observations, news, humor and opinion. Go back, give it a shot and see if you still feel this way.
One's Twitter experience is largely dependent on who one follows. If you follow only those who do the aforementioned pointlessness sharing, then yeah, it's a waste of time. Be judicious and discerning, and you'll find its very useful and gratifying.
It's also a by-and-large positive exchange, which is more than can be said of the bulk of Gawker Media commentary.

End of story.
Goodnight!

How is Twitter going to make enough money to pay for the servers and engineers it will take to build and run a "real time news service"? There's a big difference between Twitter and search.
Microsoft + Yahoo + Altavista + Lycos + Ask + Metafilter + Cuil + Powerset = 25% of the US search market. And Microsoft and Yahoo are still throwing buckets of money at the problem (without success), since they make profit from other places though Ballmer might have given up by now.
Does Facebook turn a profit yet? And they're bigger than Twitter.
Sure, Twitter (the company) might turn out to be huge -- but they're going to have to change a bunch.

And yes, I'm being dismissive because that's what Twitter deserves. (And yes, I have a Twitter account.)

"Journalists" love writing about Twitter because everything about the service is hypothetical. This allows them to jack themselves off while writing a bunch of nonsensical garbage that can't be proven incorrectly in the present, and will be forgotten in the near future, leaving them free from ownership should their bullshit be exposed at some point. The bottom line is, people feel the need to talk about Twitter because other people are talking about it. Mindless fucking sheep talking about a mindless fucking service.
And Owen ... to say Twitter would ever replace Google in search isn't just ignorant, it's fucking stupid. Yes, Owen, whoever said that is fucking stupid. Have you ever heard of Google News? Yes, there is a chance that some people may first be alerted of critical events via Twitter, but they aren't going to stick around and search the site for information knowing that they are going to get amateur 140 character posts. They are going to either go to their favorite news site, turn on the TV, or go to Google. That's just a fact.
Twitter will NEVER be profitable. I bet my Gawker commenter account on it. Also, I'm willing to bet a large sum of cash if anyone is interested.
