as a devotee of the "old" Monkey Bar, I made my peace many moons ago with its passing from this world. This bullshit simulacrum isn't the same thing. Not even close.

I'm trying to imagine who would qualify for muralization in today's NYC, and the only person who came to mind was that tacky Russian kleptocrat heiress whose chandelier fell on her bed.

Anything that's guaranteed to irritate Bill O'Reilly and the religious right is OK in my book. But I have to agree that a billboard is not a very effective marketing tool. Perhaps, they should stage interventions at Sunday Mass.

A more effective method of recruiting atheists is to simply remind people that the popular conception of the afterlife is basically a party after the drugs and alcohol have run out...yet no one goes home.

I am an Episcopalian, it is about as close to Atheist as you can get, but we have some nice music on Sundays and in many places some free sherry after.

If the world was run by Episcopalians/Anglicans we would probably be in a much better, more thoughtful, slightly hungover world. Ooh, almost time for elevenses!

There you have it. You think these christers could come up with all that amazing mythology on their own? It's like cooking from scratch; them as can, do, them as can't, drive thru.

shhh Okay, so this morning I go to wake my son and there's a brand new shirt hanging in his room that reads "Real Men Love Jesus." He's 18. I've always stood by the belief that I would be supportive of whatever faith they chose, or none at all, but now I worry he's headed down the wrong path. Church every Sunday, listening to Christian rock. He has a bible in his CAR!

This is how the children of gays and lesbians rebel. Next thing you know, he's going to tell me he's dropped out of college to attend the seminary.

Oh, and to be on topic, I support the atheist movement. I don't think it's okay to tell the faithful that their belief system is incorrect. However, I also think our society has a real problem with religious doctrine dictating our policies. The Christian evangelicals are a strong, wealthy lot though. I think it's important to proceed cautiously.

Oh, for fuck's sakes. I've argued before how I think the atheist billboards, while certainly entitled to exist, are silly- anyone really determining spiritual beliefs based on roadside advertising is probably not someone you want in your corner. That being said, I am really tired of right-wing evangelicals conflating America with religion. AMERICA is a nation, and has nothing to do with God. They're two entirely different entities. It's as if someone claimed they didn't believe in wormholes, and I accused them of being a Communist. TWO ENTIRELY UNRELATED THINGS.

@Inescapeable Picnic: Right, but are billboards going to get them in your corner? Or provoke a backlash? Why not invest the money in actually provoking critical thought-rather than in a printed soundbite?

@katastic: What country do you live in? This is America. We make all of our decisions based on soundbites. Spending money trying provoke critical thought is as worthwhile an investment as throwing it into a big hole.

@ClearAirTurbulence: @ClearAirTurbulence: @katastic: You are absolutely right to say that there should be no connection between American and belief. The problem is that the separation is disappearing. That is why atheists take out billboards and speak out. Religion is introducing ID into science curriculm, denying civil rights to homosexuals, and influencing court room sentencing. That's the short list. Secular society does need to stand up to this. Billboards are just a rallying point to remind people that they are not alone in their struggle, and other people will support them if they stand up.

@katastic: Visibility. It's like taking out an ad in Variety to protest the canceling of your favorite tv show (or most political rallies), it showing the general public that this opinion exists, enough people (and money) hold it, and maybe you should be paying attention to it.

@bjonston: Of course you would be able to say that if God exists, otherwise belief in God would become meaningless. God doesn't want sycophants but those who believe because they want to. Unlike Kim Jong Il or Vladimir Putin.

@ClearAirTurbulence: But I thought God was all into striking down the non-believers with a bolt of lightning or plagues and stuff like that. I mean it's been like what, an hour since I uttered my heretical statement of non-belief and as best as I can tell there's not a lightning cloud in the sky.
