@SanFranLefty: Wow. Scary good get. Considering the number of death threats he gets every day, and the nutjob crazies gathering blocks from his house brandishing pictures of him looking like Hitler, I'm gonna say: Good idea, Secret Service dudes.
@DorothyBarker: I consulted with Mr. SFL, and he agrees that looking at the weird square shape under his shirt he's totally wearing a bulletproof vest. This makes me so sad that the crazy pants people are so crazy that he has to do this even for a cheesy press appearance with little kids on the lawn.
@SanFranLefty: I've consulted with others who would have insight into this and they say that weird boxy square shape of his torso totally indicates he's wearing a bulletproof vest under his oxford and over this undershirt. Even for an appearance on the lawn.
I'm happy that our President spends his spare time debating whether if two black holes appeared next to each other they would both fall into themselves — instead of clearing brush.
@momof3wildkids: Oh, young padawan...to be nerd is to be hip. Tsk. Now you've disturbed all of our spoon bending. Jostled a nest of bees, you did. You must now denounce all conservative leanings and bow to our supreme overnerdlord. Heh. And you just wanted to mock the height of our leader’s pants, didn’t you? Mistake!
I hate to be the one to point this out, but even when he called Kanye a jackass, he sounded like a dork who was trying to impress the cool kids. The cool kids in that situation were the White House Press Corps. Ouch.
I just finished up searching the net for a free program that would allow me to track my co-ed intramural softball team's statistics, as our first game is tonight. When I finished I returned to gawker and read this post. So yeah, I guess Obama is a nerd, but compared to who? Compared to me, dude is Richard Grieco.
@ima221: Whatever, man! Grieco was a total poseur. Yeah, I said it. He was a glorified Billy Zane, a peon, like a serious C. Thomas Howell. Deal with that!
@Double Banger: Oh, good God. I love him, but wow, my lust faded just a smidge seeing that photo. And I'm a huge geek! Oh, Bama, stay. away. from. the. Wal-Mart.
@katekate is squared: Our last President probably would have flashed Dr. Spock the live-long-and-prosper sign, while grinning and making his "heh" laugh and being so proud of himself not realizing the mistake.
They are adapting "Death: The High Cost of Living" but I dont think WB is doing that but Gaiman himself.
But Vertigo stuff is too cerebral for general audiences. Most Americans want bang pow action hero shit, and cant deal with actually thinking in a movie.
As much as I love Sandman, I can't see a film doing any justice to the source material. For one thing, the temptation to make the main character actually likable would prove immense and once that happens? pfft, fuhgeddaboudit.
You're on the right track with Vertigo titles, though. Let's see Preacher, Transmet, Y the Last Man or DMZ get the treatment. Those have enough "bang-bang, kiss the girl" to be be treated in a manner resembling "right."
Ya know what'll happen if they make a Sandman movie? Constantine. 'Nuff said. MAYBE WORSE.
@Bill Zilla: Except wouldn't all of those would have to be toned down in some way?
Preacher? Not in these United States. Red states would riot.
Y the Last Man is being developed, but with Shia Lebeouf. Yeah... that's a good casting choice.... I'm not even going to get started on 60 issues in 90 minutes.
Transmet? How would you do that? The budget would either be too high, everything would look muppety, or the whole plot would have to change to resemble something else. Would never work.
Vertigo has potential as HBO series, but as movies? Not going to happen, and especially not going to happen in a way you or I would enjoy them.
@Paul_Is_Drunk: I still don't get why LaBeouf is not a good choice for Yorrick, but whatever...
If Warner Bros. could pull their thumbs out of their asses they could get a really good set of traditional superhero movies going, with The Flash and Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, etc. At least they're finally lurching and limping towards a Green Lantern flick.
@Paul_Is_Drunk:
Yes, true. Preacher, if done correctly, probably couldn't get made as a film, But it could make a pretty good film.
I will refrain from judgement of Shia as Yorick until I have more information, but I'd describe my reaction as "cautiously pessimistic."
Transmet could be a great film and a better TV series. Perhaps not as a direct adaption of the original series, but the premise itself could drive a pretty decent movie if Ellis got a pass at the script... and I think Ellis might have a good time with it. Terry Gilliam would be a great choice for a director.
In general, I agree with you, though. Much better than all of this would be HBO dubbing Tuesday nights (for instance) "Vertigo Night" and airing fantastic adaptations of these phenomenal series, but.. ya know.. let's also wish for a pony and wings that work.
Given that WB is directly controlling the stick now and the name of this game is "let's make some cash from comix movies," I was merely positing some series that I feel would make much better films than Sandman.
