    Why are we are we protecting the rights of the criminals (the CIA agents)? What about the rights of the victims (the people wrongfully detained and tortured)?

    I lied to Congress and all I got was this lousy freedom medal. I think someone needs to remind the spooks that they are not an agency acting independently. They are funded by and responsible to the American public. Otherwise Robert Novak will tell everyone their names

    Yeah, Panetta was my Congressman, too. And I agree with the rest about him being well regarded and able. Did a nice job withe getting Cal State Monterey Bay started, too.

    As one of Panetta's constituents in his former California congressional district, he seems to be an extremely able, well-regarded and honest guy, even if CIA director seems like an odd post for him. (Bush's choice of Hayden was criticized for, among other things, his being a pure military and NSA spook -- a civilian might be a better choice.)


    But there are possible intrigues in Panetta's past. He was Chairman of the House Budget Committee that in 1990 convinced George HW to raise taxes and break his "read my lips" promise, which arguably cost him the '92 election. Clinton gets elected and Panetta moves to OMB, then Chief of Staff. Was it luck or Machiavellian guile?


    The early Clinton admin was flying apart and Panetta is widely credited with having brought discipline when he became Chief of Staff. And the minute he left, in 1997, Clinton started getting blowjobs.
