I'm sorry Hamilton, but let's be clear. Go into any courthouse around the country and go watch the foreclosure proceedings. Here's what you'll see, people who won't hire a lawyer but who have money for iPhones, for a 2006 car, for new clothes and big tv. Twenty years ago, your parents would not have thought of going to court without a lawyer. Now, people just say "fuck it" because they figure they can go negotiate with the bank or an institution on their own. Bad news folks, institutions depend on you not getting a lawyer to fight them because they know you prefer the iPhone to a good credit score and default-free mortgage. Are there bad lawyers out there who take your money and don't do anything for their fee? Sure, but they are a tiny minority. If you are getting sued, go beg and borrow money to get a lawyer. It has to be your priority above a shiny new fucking material good to show off to the world.

@saythatscool: No, you're a billion percent dead on. Most people don't know anything about the law and somehow assume they can properly represent themselves, but they would never think about building their own house, fixing their own car, or conducting their own surgery. Or hell, even doing their own taxes (how many people don't think twice about wasting a hundred bucks every year on H&R Block?).

As for having "a legal system that could be navigated by the average person," what the hell does that even mean? Should we abolish common law, or just force every single person in the U.S. to learn every legal precedent? Or maybe, a là west ham sandwich's idea, we can just have a legal system app. So if something "legal" happens to you, you can run the app and it'll shout things like
">"Outrageous!" and "Baloney!". CASE CLOSED.

@kimsama: My favorite is watching the lawyerless, and soon to be homeless, wait to go into the courtroom. Half are carrying $4 Starbucks Mocha Lattes for their daily fix. Because making your own coffee and giving up that $120 per month habit so you can pay it to a lawyer on a payment plan is absolutely unthinkable.

@saythatscool: I have to admit, i've wondered about things like that myself. People who can't afford housing but have the latest threads, for example. But then, i don't understand that whole mindset. I suppose they're trying to send a message with status markers, but given how easily all that can (and is) faked, there's no point to display, anymore. Or am i overthinking it?

and about the iPhone...they're so totally over. The sig line on mine (A release, bitches) is, "iPhones were a lot cooler before everyone had one." And i saved up for it, so clearly i'm out of touch to begin with.

@saythatscool: oh, haha, i guess tomorrow when i go into my job where i work with low income citizens i'll be sure to stop by the man who's living out of his fucking car in the parking lot and scold him for spending all of his money on lattes and iphones! except that's not what happened, he got lymphoma and his finances got FUCKED and he likes squatting in our lot since it's close to the VA hospital where he's getting sub-par treatment! he's a real nice guy, but it never hurts to remind him that people hate him cuz he's poor! that way, he'll never think that he's better than a pile of shit!
