NYTimes blogs have some of the most racist, sexist, obnoxious, poorly spelled, craptacular comments I have ever seen.
Here's one from today:
Obama needs to remember he is President and act like one, not a superstare celebrity. What mag. cover or TV show is next? How about photos of him working at the job he was elected to do, speaking without Mr. Prompter at his side. Learn to say more than aaaahhhhhhhhh. Oh, yes and keep his word to America!- Ronda
@hortense: I AM PERZNALLY OFFNDED AT YOU MAKIN FUN OF MY POSTIN ON THE JEWEYORK TIMES WEBITENETZ. YOU AND THE REST OF THISES HAFRICANS LUVRS WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT U NEED TO BE NICE TO THE TARDZ TOO SHOULD BE ASHAMED BECAUSE I BELIVE IN THE BABY JESUS AS MY LORD AND CHEVIER. NOBAMA SHOULD POLOGIZE TO THEM POOR DROOLING BAZTARDS LIKE MY SISTER/COUSIN WHO ONLIE TRIES TO DO HER BEST FOR OHTER SISTER/MAMA. UNFRTNATELY, HER BEST IS USUALLY JST RAPIN THE DOG. NO MORE MUSLIN RETARD FUNNY MAKERS!!
@hortense: It's true. The NYT suffers from both an overabundance and dearth of editorial discretion when they publish comments. I rarely see comments that directly contradict the main point of the post, but I often see comments like the one above. Marketplace of ideas my ass.
@saythatscool: About 12 - 13 years ago when I first got on the interwebz the NYT had a discussion board and one of the topics was something like opinions on the greatest book ever written. It was bunch of posts about how great the bible is.
If you want blogs to be accepted as legitimate sources of news (including yours) by the general public, then this is how it happens.
The more the Greg Whitneys of the world have influence over the blogosphere, the better it will be for you and everyone else. I'm not saying Whitney needs to have a say about what Gawker does or doesn't do, but his presence as a gatekeeper for NYT.com will reassure a lot of people still getting comfortable with the print-online transition that online publications have value.
A rising tide lifts all boats, and Times' boat is a lot bigger than yours. Why bite the hand that feeds you?
@ithacabaron: Here is one issue I have with this- Gawker does come up with some hard-hitting exclusive pieces once in a while, but our whole news cycle has become so degraded that basically nothing is "news" anymore. I really can't see a difference between turning to cable news versus a blog; aren't they both just aggregations of useless information?
Basically, I just don't get why people see a difference between Gawker's most vapid reporting on celebs, and the hardest hitting economic reporting CNN or CNBC can muster
@Hamilton Nolan: Ironically, his given name is actually Greg Whitney and he changed it to the more glamorous Craig for the newspaper business. Full circle and all that.

Jesus, the standards for their blogs are apparently higher than the standards for their Op-Ed page.

Um... Exactly. Blogs are written by the newsroom and shouldn't sound like they are written by op-ed writers.
