I'm not really disapproving of Jackie and Bobby, so much as I feel bad for Ethel who was, by all accounts, the most devoted, loyal and supportive wife anyone could hope for.

@Queen of the Passive Aggressives: You know, I had one friend who lost her father and for the next few months after that she slept with a TON of guys - in a way, I understood, just a way to connect with people, feel alive, etc. Everyone has their own way of reacting to death (this Jackie's excuse; have no idea what Bobby's is).

By the age of 33 she had lost two of the four babies she'd gave birth to, watched her husband get shot while sitting next to her and planned a funeral with the whole world watching. I don't really care how she got through life after all that..

Okay, cheating on your wife is one thing, but cheating in front of her on a boat with your sister-in-law? Good God, the Kennedy men were miserable bastards.

Among the many benefits of the internet is that now the marrieds can fuck people they don't know instead of fucking their friends and neighbors and, apparently, their relatives. That's got to be a big step forward for civilization and for marriage.

Any worse than cheating on your wife with a former Robert Kennedy aide named Mary Jo (who was so devastated by Bobby's death that she couldn't go back to D.C.), and driving home with her drunk and killing her - and not calling the cops until the next day?

THere are many people on here who will say "miserable bastards" can be effective lawmakers, and Ted has accomplished so much, blah blah blah. He will always be an adulterous man willing to sacrifice a life for his own reputation.

@FormerEnglishMajor: I don't disagree with you one bit. Teddy is just as much of a miserable bastard as were his brothers. The father was the same way.

If it is revealed a few years from now that Teddy sexed up Jackie after Bobby's death, my only surprise would be that Jackie's standards had sunk so low.

And political or other accomplishments don't mean we should forgive the awful, caddish, despicable treatment of one's spouse. One can be a great politician (or doctor or scientist or whatever) and still be an awful human being.

@DaveCrabtree: I guess for me, I don't see how one gets put back into elected office. It is an honor to serve, while being a doctor or scientist is a position you are hired to do (or can do self-employed). That Ted gets the opportunity to be considered the "Lion of the Senate" and some great wonderful guy - it is one thing to cheat on your wife. It is maybe another to abuse alcohol.

But to leave a young woman to die - to me - crosses all bounds of forgiveness. There is no forgiveness for not trying your damndest to help someone in a drowning situation YOU PUT HER IN. I don't know the girl or her family, but just thinking of her in a car filling with water - while TEd calls his lawyers but not the cops - that defies forgiveness. Adultery/booze - that can be forgiven (if not forgotten).

The people of Massachusetts feel differently, I guess. Of course, we know how good they are at self-governance. When a New Yorker can say that about another state, you know things are bad there.

if he was kneeling and he had one hand on her breast and one hand down her bikini bottoms, he'd probably fall over -- i tried this exact maneuver four or five times this holiday weekend with that exact result.... i was drunk. i assume that Kennedy was drunk too. i also assume that you are currently drunk.

For instance, when the server at the local sports bar says "how is everything" I'll say "Great! The burger and fries are as chummy and relaxed as a pair of Cheshire cats, in my stomach." and then I will make out with my brother-in-laws wife, placing one hand on her breast and the other inside of her bikini bottom.
