I'm starting to think that Albany is more fucked up than Springfield!
In Illinois, we know that 100% of our elected officials are crooks.
It's a given.
But our crooks just want more power & money for themselves.
Yours are just totally fucking nuts!
Notice that the states that are in the most trouble have a huge city that's hundreds of miles from the overgrown small town that's the capitol: Illinois, California, New York....
And that capitol city's sole business is the state government, which is always a mess.
@Greasy Thumb Guzik: Well, our Senate Majority Leader is a big wuss, which was the cause of most of the problem. If it were me, I would have told those asshat Gang of Four to go right ahead and caucus with the Republicans and remind them that they have to face the voters again in just two years, and see how many of them manage to survive their next Democratic primary.
Shocking how few people have commented on this very important topic. Granted, it's a holiday weekend (Viva America!) but this is serious. As far as I can see, this was a "wrench" in the works of protections for renters in rent-controlled apartments in NY, as well as gay marriage, unions, or whatever else you want to call them. Amongst many other things. To me, this is extremely scary. That these tactics could be used when dealing with the people of New York State is appalling. This is the stuff of 2nd tier novels, not the governance of "the capitol of the world"!! The two "defectors" have a very checkered past, and the addition of a power hungry pushy billionaire adds to the shadiness.
Glad they are not being paid. To whom can we appeal to set all of this straight? Our President? How does one convince the higher-ups that "something is rotten in Denmark"?
I am scared, really scared. This type of behavior is permeating every pore of our society and it is very dangerous. Add the bankruptcy of GM, the deficits, North Korea, our army in tatters...
This chaos in Albany is something that should be looked at very carefully by the residents of New York State, upstate as well as down. This is completely unacceptable and must be stopped post haste!
@Private Hangnail: Apparently. You can work like hell to elect a bunch of new ones, but you still have to worry about who those idiots downstate are sending to Albany. Fortunately, downstaters aren't too keen on stuff like this, and neither one of these bozos will still be getting another term.
So the only State Senate Democrats who caucus with the Republicans are both crooks? At least Lieberman has the courtesy to remain a thorn without pulling the trigger.
I think the problem is the upstate 9/10s of New York state. If you got rid of it, you wouldn't have these problems.
You think maybe you could sell it to Canada? Quebec could annex it and change all the street signs to French. Tell them they can have it for real cheap.
It means New York will continue to terribly lag states like Iowa in providing basic human rights while its citizens arrogantly claim it to be the most progressive place in America.
@HiredGoons: Republicans were allowing their caucus a free vote on the issue previously and the one dem who threatened to leave the party if it came to the floor for a vote didn't switch. Given that, its still very possible that it could pass this year (or at least go to a referendum).
