Better Know a District is always the best part of this show. I loved the Eleanor Holmes Norton ones, when he asked her why she was undressing him with her eyes.
I watched the Freshman Year series on CNN.com with Congressmen Polis and Chaffetz and they were both pretty funny guys, though I agree with few of Chaffetz's political opinions.
Give a Colbert power madness for 40 seconds, he writes an hilarious email. Give a Colbert actual power for a few years, and who know what drollery might ensue? Declare yourself into more positions of power, please, Stephen!
Honestly, all this Argentine Mistress and Appalachian Trail wank is just ha-ha fun. But I don't care that he was off cheating.
What the huge deal is that he r-u-n-n-o-f-t while still Governor, didn't transfer power over to Lt. Gov and was incommunicado for days. He abandoned his elected duty PERIOD. That alone should get him out of office. It's not a morality or a hypocrisy thing. It's total dereliction of duty. In fact, this is the definition of such.
@The Real JR: This is usually how these things go. It is rarely the act that's the problem, it's the cover-up afterwards (Clinton) or the sheer hypocrisy (Spitzer) that does and should piss off people. I don't care that some politicians aren't faithful, but I do care that such morons are our leaders. These things keep happening and all you can think about these people with really fucking crappy judgment is, THESE are the people in charge?
You hope that the market corrects itself and that someone like Sanders - that would just up and abandon his duties for some pussy in South America - just won't get elected again, that's how it should work. But this is America, and he probably will get elected again, and if not, he'll do a reality show or something. There is no accountability anymore.
I've been a fan of Stephen Colbert's since his Strangers With Candy days, but I had no idea of the fearful symmetry of his genius until I read this. I find myself both awestruck and terrified. And I kind of have to pee.
@lawyergay: So brilliant. Didn't he say last night that he has applied for VA benefits now that he's back from doing his show in Iraq? It's so great that he can bring attention to important things like the care of our vets while simultaneously mocking the establishment.
@lawyergay: He even added typos, presumably to make it seem more legit. Incredible! It's not all that surprising to me that Repubs haven't figured out he's making fun of them.
@Frecklepup: Bob Hope aired his USO shows too -- they just didn't have the tech to do it instantly, like Colbert.
Looks like he put on a show that the troops are enjoying. Add that to the Iraq-centric Newsweek he "guest edited" and the constant fundraising for military causes, and your claim what he's just doing this for publicity comes across as rather hollow.
it's inspiring to watch this. reminds me of how many kids are still over there, and the depth of their commitment to being of service. and kudos to colbert for bringing home to them.
I'm in Afghanistan, but I've been following the story on the news and online. Everyone I know here has been getting a huge kick out of it. It's nice to see a liberal really do something for the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and not just talk about it.
In a week where the murder in Little Rock of PVT William Long by a religious extremist was virtually ignored by the mainstream media in favor of another religious extremist murder, it's nice to remind the American public that there still are two wars going on, and that they're very real to the people living them. Iraq may be winding down, but fatalities in Afghanistan are rising.
@momof3wildkids: @The Cajun Boy: @geerays: Hey guys, thanks for the thoughts, but just to clarify, I have a very safe job here. I'm not out on patrols like the infantry guys or anything. So thanks for the good wishes, but don't worry about me here. The most dangerous thing I do every day is walk to lunch.
@Adah: Well you certainly aren't summering in the Hamptons are you? Regardless of your job there, there are a lot of people who appreciate what you do. I am one of them.
@Adah: Not to pick nits, dude, but liberals have not been lax in supporting troops - from FDR's GI bill that still provides educational benefits, to fixing Walter Reed Hospital. One of the most egregious canards foisted on the American psyche is the idea that conservatives have a lock on the wise administration of US defense. BTW, while Ronald Reagan was serving in the US First Motion Picture unit during WWII, he was an active trade unionist member of the Democratic Party.
This cat, regardless of his political beliefs, has done more to promote pro-soldier charities and organizations through his show than all the Fox pundits put together.
This always impressed me, even when his satire wears a bit thin, but if you do a show 4x a week, it will get a bit Regis and Kathified - kudos to the writers for keeping it fresh for so long.
It's important to recognize that USO has been out there doing their thing since this began. Go to Colbertnation.com and kick a few bucks towards a classroom project for soldier's kids.
And then you don't have to have that stupid ribbon on your car messing up the paint.
@Ken Elwell: That's what struck me about his broadcast from Iraq, that he was sort of sending up the war but still paying tribute to the soldiers, very sincerely. Deftly done.
@ninety_nine: I sincerely hope no one carves a farewell message to me on their head after I die. I might come back to haunt them until they get rid of it.

Add "one-trick pony" to Colbert's list of sins and I'd say he's damned to an eternity of late night at basic cable.

I guess it wasn't Colbert or we would have known about it. He can't take a piss without alerting the media.
