My preferred method of retrieving data using natural language queries is by using virginal priestesses that live in mountain temples. Their services do indeed cost me a goat, require me to participate in ritual cleansing, fasting, abstention from all sexual activity and avoiding touching unclean women for up to two weeks, but there is the added advantage of my being able to receive my data in dactylic hexameter with complex rhyme schemes.

WOlframAlpha is near complete crap. I've tried around 40 queries so far and none of them have been great. Maybe 10 were OK, rest just plain awful.

So far, this service is a giant fail.

I love it. It's like a really smart calculator. Unfortunately, it's not robust enough to answer the questions that I need answered with any great frequency. Give it some time and some input from the humanities community and it will get there.

@i'm a bottle: The weather data is golden as is the demographics stuff. I love how they spit out the charts automatically for you.

To be honest, the only hype I read about this was a gushing piece by one Owen Thomas. Not surprised it ended this way.

Back when I was a kid we had two places in town to go get answers. There was the library, with its books and facts and encyclopedias, and metal detectors. And there was Rupert K. McCormack. Ol' Rupe could answer just about anything, and in half the time. He was right just about as often, and was often so much more helpful than those tired old books. Often, he was also much more forthcoming about certain subjects, such as drugs, videotape, and certain legal matters, than those dusty old women and the books they kept pretty down there at the main branch's special collections room.

Yep. Back when I was a kid...

Awww...it's ok honey. You must have just had a birthday. The library was a special place back in those days wasn't it...

before quaint town libraries turned to big community centers with neglected children hogging the computers.

Yes, remember the oak card holders of the Dewey Decimal System.

I thought Wolfram was working on revising the scientific method by deconstructing the process of induction or something. I don't know, even this seems like a comedown.

While the potential ramifications of this 'next great leap' are exciting,
I'm still going for the anagrams.

This is the mechanical turk. See if Jeff Bezos or D.E. Shaw is involved.
