Rehabilitate his image? Did I hear that right? You mean the 1990s were not the era of peace and prosperity brought on in large part by a well-run government? That is, well-run in spite of (as opposed to the RW claim that it was because of) idiot Republicans in Congress? What is there to rehabilitate?
Mr. Clinton just went to North Korea and successfully pulled a Jimmy Carter. Why can't we just celebrate it instead of analyze it to death trying to find fault with the man?
It's unclear why, exactly, the government of the United States of America would need to rely on Bing's largesse for the repatriation of two of its citizens
John, it's been more or less fully established that this was being handled as a private matter, separate from any national interests like the 6-party nuclear talk, in which the US Govt was monitoring but was, in theory, staying completely out of. So it would make sense that transportation and the like would be handled within a private capacity. The US Govt isn't beholden to fly every American Citizen working for a private corporation who gets themselves into trouble.
Granted, there is a grey area here in terms of US involvement since Sec. Clinton "apologized" much like Kim Jong conditioned, but still.
@The Real JR:
It's for these same reasons that all involved made it known that Bill hadn't spoken to Barack beforehand, or that though the conversation might go into different areas about which Pres. Clinton has an interest or expertise, he wasn't empowered to promise or do anything on behalf of the US government.
"Plausible deniability", "cover your ass", "sit with your back to the wall" or maybe the lyrics to "The Gambler", the actual definition is somewhere around these terms.
i was just wondering who paid for the flight. it seems obvious to me that the US gov tried to keep its hands clean of this for diplomatic reasons-- thus the emphasis that Clinton traveled as a "private citizen." If the State department had paid for the flight, it would have been a government operation, which they clearly didn't want it to be. (negotiating with terrorists, etc etc etc.)

I actually sympathize with these guys because they must put up with so much mind-melting stupidity and fist-clenching irritation from the idiot girls they chase all day and night.
Seriously, can you imagine how many times they've endured any of the following:
1. Ayn Rand recommendation
2. Denial of sex due to intestinal cleansing
3. Threesome...all puking into the tub
4. "I'm not that kind of girl...etc."
5. Harry Potter recommendation
6. Shopping spree
7. Real boyfriend lurking in background
8. Homely friend along for the ride
9. "Wow, I didn't expect to see you here."
10. Ms. Doesn't-like-anything-ever-at-all
11. Pair of Russian babes talking shit about you to each other right in front of you
I went to Joe's Pub to see Gilberto Gil, and Rushdie was standing around trying to get a front-row table without having a ticket in advance. He was quite insistent, pulling the "do you know who I am?" act with the house manager (who did, and made it clear that she didn't give a rat's ass).
He eventually did get into the standing area in the back, and was apparently there for the purpose of picking up Brazilian women -- all way out of his league.
