Is there a way to regulate these machines, say with a State Commission? Call me old fashioned, but these things haven't exactly proven their worth in reliability over the years...

@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: They reliably transfer funds from the voting machine manufacturers, et al, to the coffers of congressional re-election campaigns.

Getting instant run-off voting is going to be a top priority for this Minnesotan. I am so sick of third-party candidates leaving us with the worst possible person winning. And I never ceased to be amazed by the idiots falling for this crap!

@itsalwaysthequietones: I agree, but my understanding of the law (and I'm practicing the art of bullshitting, here) is that instant run-off voting would violate a rigid interpretation of "one person, one vote" established by the U.S. Supreme Court in Reynolds v. Sims (1964).

Why can't they just have a runoff sans the independent candidate?

@ObtuseIntolerant sees lots of work to do.: The law in MN is that when the margin is this close, it goes to an automatic recount. The recount's the final word, so far as I know-no runoffs. This is the closest election since our gubernatorial race in the 50's (i think)-which was won by 91 votes.

I voted for Franken. But I'm sure we won't know who the victory belongs to until 5.7 years into the senatorial term.

Meh. It's hockey season. And the Coen brothers are in town. And it's the deer hunting opener today. Ice fishing is just around the corner. And I have a lutefisk in the oven. And tonight I get to go to a meat raffle at the VFW with Sven, Lena, and Ole. And the RNC is out of town for a long time to come.

Not feeling so stabby after all.

Am I the only one who can't stand Al Franken? He comes across as such a pompous blowhard that it cancels out his early-SNL contributions.

@Products Will Save Me: You are not the only one. I still want him to win, because 1) he is intelligent, and I like intelligent persons in our Congress and 2) he will be, one thinks, too busy to try to be funny.

Indeed, with the exception of Stuart Smalley, I hold his SNL contributions against him.

@souldecirce: I agree. I don't care how big of a dink he is, I just like that he very, very smart. Half the time I see Norm Coleman and I really think I can see the planets floating around his head.
However, I think a majority of Minnesota voters are kind of thinking that they would both just go the hell away. (At least I do)

@Helman: Indeed I have not, so my opinion of him is based on nothing too substantial. I don't discount the fact that he's intelligent and has a head for politics, I just think he comes across as incredibly, irritatingly arrogant. That's all.

I'd still like to know what happened in Alaska. Something is terribly, horribly wrong there. Other than the obvious. Governor Palin and, well, being Alaska.

I was in MN recently and both Coleman and Franken were running ads ad nauseum. Like every commercial break. I'm sure the MN voters just wish it were all over.

But I'm really hoping Stuart Smalley makes it. Can you imagine Senator Stuart Smalley?
