Terrorism never happens in a vacuum. It always happens in an environment where extremist beliefs are sown, nurtured and encouraged to explode in violence. The Obama administration committed a grave error. At a time when right-wingers are pushed daily since last year's election season to feel rage and express it without restraint, it was sheer folly to pretend that we have nothing to worry about from domestic terrorists who masquerade as patriots.
There is a strong possibility that this attack is only the first of many. Keep in mind that to many people, Tiller's assassin is a brave warrior, hero and a martyr who will be exalted in heaven. Sound familiar?

My own position on abortion - that the health and wellbeing of the mother and the family trump the health and wellbeing of an unborn child or fetus or embryo or blastula or fertilized ovum - still decries every abortion as undesirable, but at least acknowledges that there are circumstances for which a single rule doesn't work. I have never once cheered the death of an abortion opponent, never once called for the death of protestors or even their arrest and repression. I go to bed every night confident that I have not called for the death or mistreatment of another human being. I will go to my death knowing that I have never crowed victoriously over the harm inflicted on those with whom I disagree. Can you really be prepared to meet the prince of peace or divine judgement having cheered the death of another of their beloved children?
God does not need your help to punish the wicked. God has historically been pretty testy about usurping moral authority. Try not to piss off God when you're going about claiming to represent his interests and serve his needs.

Now, now - I didn't say I was speaking for God.
But as to the good doctor's career choice - I think it's an aberrant existence.
To toil through years of medical school, only to emerge as a maggot that feeds on moral decay is truly abhorrent.
It's a bizarre career choice that lacks any semblance of dignity - and one that is known to be a focal point for for extremists.
To pursue that path in life entails an element of risk - as it is known to elicit acts of hostility.

I actually think Dr. Tiller was more compassionate and courageous then your average doctor performing abortions. Almost all late term abortions are because something has gone terribly horribly wrong during the pregnancy. It is a horrifying, heartwrenching experience that nobody undergoes just because they suddenly wake up and decide they don't want a kid. You know that but you don't want to admit it.
He dealt, with compassion, with women who were emotionally shattered. And he did it at such high risk to himself that he lost his life to help this women.
He was a good man.

I didn't mention late term abortions because, as you correctly stated, the are oftentimes the only solution to a disastrous situation.
I'm critical of his career choice to run an abortion mill, rather than handling the late term scenarios as an adjunct to a legitimate practice.
