Wow, who knew the Bible was such a downer....maybe Christians should read something more inspirational...like maybe the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants?...I haven't read it myself, but the movie was surprisingly less cloying than one would imagine....I don't think those girls wanted to smite anyone....except maybe their younger sisters....and those pesky boys....I think those pants performed miracles too, although that may be heresay..
These people will never learn. For weeks in advance they prayed for rain the night of Obama's Convention speech and it turned out to be a beautiful night. The opening of the Republican Convention, however, had to be delayed because they didn't want to appear callous and insensitive while a hurricane made landfall along the Gulf Coast. Go figure.
@BicycleShed: Since they're so big on talking about how God speaks to them directly, you'd think they'd wonder if God's hand WAS at work there. Just not in the way they want.
It's nut jobs like this that get this type of media coverage that make the world think that all of America is fucking crazy. I go to Europe and the automatic assumption is that I'm an uneducated, spoiled and intolerant whore! (thanks Paris Hilton for that last part) Of course when I chastise them in their own language and bust out a few more languages and details about their own crappy country that they can't be proud of, it tends to put them in their place. And, hopefully, they've learned their lesson about judging a person based on what they see on TV or movies. Shit like this still pisses me off though. I didn't drink the Kool-Aid on Obama but, fuck, this is crazy. How can you hate a person this much just based on the color of their skin?!
Who knew you could turn Christianity into a gang? Apparently all of these people. By rights their Bibles should engulf them all into a huge wall of sin-identifying flame and festering blisters, in that order, or right after the harmonious rupturing of bowels only made better by the strategic placement of their asses attached to their faces in some sort of ecclesiastic act of righteousness.
@OMG! Ponies!: Of course. God decrees it. You know, that God who's just and loving, who clothed the naked and fed the poor and suffered the little children to come unto him. He also hates socialist Muslim Nazi communists too.
@OMG! Ponies!: Man, these "Christians" would FREAK if they realized they were worshipping a hippyish Middle Eastern Jew who loved The Poors and preached passive resistance. If Jesus were to return to them in human form, they'd beat him to death before he got out of the parking lot.
@OMG! Ponies!: It's the difference between hating one person versus hating an entire country. Totally different. (I would never say it or buy the bumper sticker etc., but it makes sense. Oh, and I'm not Christian or Muslim.)
@BitterDiva: They won't recognize his Judaism believing that he too was a Christian instead of getting that it's Christ as in Jesus Christ. Probably why they perpetuate the notion that the Jews killed Jesus and not the Romans even though the Romans did all the butchering. And even if you want to use the excuse that the Jews turned against Jesus, well, Jesus was a Jew. No different than when Americans turn on other Americans and Christians turn on other Christians. Catholics aren't considered Christians and yet they started the whole Christ worship thing. Figure that one out. I get the pope is a farce but at least remember your roots. I so don't get that world. I grew up Catholic and yet I was never taught to hate anyone for being a different religion and was super surprised when I was old enough to understand that there was this huge movement against Catholics. I'm not a religious person at all now but I do get offended given that my family still practices and they too believe in the message of love, not hate.
@thespaceygirl: You think their hate is limited to "one person," i.e., Obama? Hardly. The same wingnuts that think this shirt is so great also wouldn't mind if every Muslim was wiped off the planet, wherever they may reside. The wingnuts' hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness in speaking about Islam and Muslims is mind-boggling. Take a tour of the comments section the freerepublic sometime if you have any doubt.
@Atilla the Bun: hmm...i think this is going somewhere unexpected. I voted for Obama and totally regret it. Totally wish he would leave office and become a talk show host. I would totally watch. I love the sound of his voice.
And there are a ton of people like me who don't want to kill all Muslims. I have Pakistani and Iranian Muslim friends whose friends and family are anti-american. It scares me. but they are good people. some people can seperate the 2 things.
@MissNormaDesmond: I know. That is what pains me the most. The irony is that if they are right that Jesus is gonna judge the heck out of them, how fondly will he look on these little snickers for pain and suffering to a family. Amazing!
@MissNormaDesmond: Judging all Christians, and Christianity as a whole, based on the stupid and ignorant actions of a few is just as wrong as saying all Muslims are terrorists, all Republicans are warmongers, and all Democrats are prolifigate spenders.
These people are not representative of what Christianity is about, just like the terrorists from 911 are not representative of what Islam is about.
@RStewie: How did you get that I was judging all Christians from what I wrote? I said that these people are being un-Christian, which implies that I'm aware there are Christians who aren't like this. That's the entire point. But thanks for the lecture.
@RStewie: Oh. It's important to remember when you're writing that unless you make your intention clear, other people may not know what it is. I'm glad we're in agreement.
@iplaudius: I want to say it's a misappropriation on their part, but I'm more frustrated by the extent to which modern Christians absolutely refuse to admit that Christianity is essentially a sect of Judiasm. Gentiles scrubbed their history pretty quickly. I'd rather they own it than deny it.
@hilikusopus: In my experience, North American Christians are not ignorant of such basic facts as these: the Old Testament comprises Jewish texts written in Hebrew; Jesus of Nazareth was a Jew; etc.
I was addressing Christians who acknowledge these facts yet remain willfully ignorant about any knowledge—theological, philological, generally critical—to be gained in considering the ramifications of Christianity’s manifold connections to Judaism.
If a Christian believes that the Psalms are holy texts, then he should not use the Psalms for silly political slogans on T-shirts. It is disrespectful to his G-d, it cheapens the texts, and it makes him and his fellows look stupid.
which is one of the foundational values of Christianity
Actually the founding text of Christianity is the New Testament. The words of Christ himself and his apostles, and those who came after. The Old Testament is generally regarded as killing time until the NT came along - all the prophetic passages are read as predicting Christ and all the vengeful bits read quaintly, like a tv show that's out of date. After all, Christ said (paraphrasing) "I came not to overturn the law, but to finish it". Meaning to end the rule of the Pharisees, and the OT in general.
Of course, this doesn't jibe with a certain world-view, so some people co-opt Christianity itself with rage and anger, bitterness and all those delightful sins which ironically are the diametric opposite of everything Christ himself preached.
So to be quite literal, any religion that preaches anything like this can be accurately described as "anti-Christ".
And you know what, I take a long view of this whole situation. From a certain immediacy this looks like the resurgence of racism. But from another perspective this is its final gasp. The last, most hardened and rancorous groups of racists are being brought out to the surface because they see their world disappearing. Obama's appearance on the American stage has had a profound impact not simply on the rational mind of America, but on the subconscious currents of it. His worth as a symbol is profound, and its purging effect on the population is undeniable, when you see this surge in anger from the worst of the worst. Clinging to their increasingly sinking islands, they call out to each other with crap like this. But it's just the howling of the doomed. Soon they'll just vanish.
@Pope John Peeps II: If the jackass modeling the shirt in the above picture is any indication, they'll all be dead of heart attacks or diabetes in a few years.
@hilikusopus: If you're saying that the author is mocking Christianity, I would disagree. Obviously, small-business tax cuts are not a foundation of Christianity. Hence, the author is saying that these people clearly don't know what genuine Christianity is.
@eatsshootsleaves: Nope, I'm not; and I get your meaning. I think Mr. John Cook was taking a swipe at Christians (e.g. conservative fundamentalists), and not Christianity, per se. But when you're an atheist, well hey, who gives a shit? --It's all the same.
They should be careful what they wish for. A President Joe Biden would pull the White House even further to the left than Glenn Beck has ever accused of Barack Obama. This is a guy who rode the train home to Delaware on weekends.
These are but a few of the other things I see happening if the Psalm 109:8 idiots get their wish:
* The Barack Obama dollar coin - to replace (finally) the one dollar bill.
* All that stuff on President Obama's to-do list? Done, within a few months. (see Great Society)
* If they don't hurry, President Biden will get to run for President twice, and serve until 2020.
I hated George W. Bush and Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld (and pretty much all their cronies), but (a) I never prayed for divine intercession to end their time in office and (b) I only wished that they'd resign in disgrace following a career-ending scandal.
Praying to the divine for the candidate you voted against to die is kind of nutty. If there is a god who is in any position of power to do anything, why not use your hotline to the heavens to pray for someone who is one of the several billion people on this planet whose life is truly horrible.
I have no illusions about how well I'm doing. The truth is that there are over 6 billion people worse off than me. If I could make a difference through prayer, it wouldn't be for something petty, like killing a politician.
@OMG! Ponies!: Exactly. If you do believe in the power of prayer how about pray for an end to poverty, illness, greed, genocide...? It's like calling 911 to ask for a recipe for turkey gravy (yes that actually happens.)
@OMG! Ponies!: Or, hypothetically, wouldn't it be better to pray for something along the lines of, "... since we're stuck with this guy for another 3 years or so, please, please, please let his policies be successful and pull our great nation out of the toilet it's currently in..." That seems a bit more productive to me, right?
@OMG! Ponies!: Oh, no, we should be praying for our high school football team to win. 'Cuz God is much more receptive to listening to those prayers than those offered up on behalf of the several billion people who live in abject poverty.

I’m glad you’re enjoying the psalms. By the way, these are songs of praise to G-d. So maybe better not deploy them for cheap political statements?
Anyway, did you know they were not written in Jacobean English? Try studying them in the original language some time. A fun challenge!
