Oh dear - does this mean my Tex-ass relatives who are against gay marriage but already both in their 2nd marriage are now divorced for a second time. But what of the sanctity of (multiple hetero) marriages!
Actually, subsection B has the answer to the whole freaking controversy. No state, and no political subdivision of any state, should be regulating marriage. It's a cultural and religious institution or it's a political and legal one. Can't be both.
@Colander: ...or it's a strictly legal institution, and in that case subject to the equal protection clause of the Constitution (for those who care about that). As usual, this whole fucking issue hinges on semantics.
If her reasoning is correct (big if), let's see all of those conservative "originalists" come up with all sorts of creative reasons as to why the law doesn't mean what it says.
@onebadclam: Texas has solidly liberal, fun-loving Austin and sophisticated arts scenes in San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas. It has only fairly recently become a Republican stronghold. Alabama has... um... err....
@Kakapo: That is very true. Unfortunately, the liberal fun-loving artists aren't in the legislature. The capital building is stuffed to the gills with potential Tom DeLays and Dick Armeys.
Is Alabama really less embarrassing than Texas? Tough call. If Rick Perry gets his wish for Texas secession then our elder statesmen will be Chuck Norris and Ted Nugent. Alabama won't look so bad then, will it?
@Poop Cooper: Or throwing the supposedly sacred baby out with the gay-marriage bathwater.
And as a Texas who voted against this dumb amendment in the first place, and also knows quite a few miserably married straight couples, I would love for this to be true.
@Trai_Dep: I bet that is an affirmative. And judging by her mentality, I bet since it was "technically" it was unprotected. Who’s going to break the news to her the risks connected to that?
@swagv: This is female focused blog with female issues. If you don't think it matters, then don't comment on Jezebel. If you don't think it matters (which it DOES) at least . make an educated comment about why it doesn't. You don't belong here. THERE ARE SO MANY FANTASTIC POSTS. You can comment on those or go to somewheres else.

now that i think about it, her shrink told her to own it, and she was determined to come out as the shining example to children she believes she is. she just got the date wrong.
I'm actually feeling bad now. I had my snark below, but maybe she's trying to be, in her awkward and embarrassing way, a bit sex-positive. For Texas I imagine that's a bit rad. She never got to finish her point. It's an embarrassing admission, in a way. But who are we to mock? Sex really is dangerous and disgusting, I half don't blame her. The Meatpacking District alone proves this.
She just sounds more like a health class teacher than someone promoting Christianist Purity rings. She didn't get a full hearing in the clip, so we don't know.
It was a bold thing to say publically, but not something terrible she deserves scorn for. Just her speaking of other ways of sexual satisfaction makes me wonder. For all we know she might be some cool Susan Boyle in Texas, awful hair but not afraid to tell young women to get a Rabbit and not fall for Smilin' Slim.
@Baroness: She was being sex-positive, actually--and sex-education-positive. But did she need to go into her sexual history to make her point? And what did it have to do with alcohol awareness? Anyway, for the full testimony, go to the link below--her testimony is under "item 2." I couldn't get the actual "view discussion" link to work--I had to use the "send item as an eclip" function to e-mail it to myself. It's RealPlayer.
@Baroness: She's obviously not embarrassed by the fact that she is "technically" a virgin--she wanted to make a public statement about it. The fact that she testified on the wrong day is funny but kind of beside her point--she felt perfectly comfortable declaring her sexual status to the world.
And because she declared this in a public forum--as opposed to some facebook page that was hacked--I don't have a problem with joking about her "presentation." I can't really imagine it would bother her much. We mock people who don't have sex because they aren't married, while she probably finds people who have sex while not married mockable (or damnable), too.
