    There is an old saying from the days of the all-Republican stranglehold on power (2oo3-2007): "cut taxes and give away billions of dollars to the Vice President's company by declaring an unfunded war on a nation that doesn't have the capabilities to attack us." True, it's not as slick as the revised lie, but it has the ring of truth.

    For what it’s worth, my grandmother taught me that very saying: "Mind the pennies, and the dollars will look after themselves." We are Jewish, and we did not come from money, so the saying did mean something to her, and to her children—and to me. I don’t think it’s offensive to cite the proverb as a "Jewish saying," if that’s indeed what it is.

    @iplaudius: Except that isn't what it says -- it says that Jews *do* this not that Jewish people *say* this.

    Besides, characterizing Jewish people as penny-pinching is classic antisemitic stereotyping.

    If they wanted to use this comparison, they could have just said that a lot of *people* who are wealthy got that way by counting pennies, etc. -- because that's true! And, more importantly, not racist. #jimdemint

    @iplaudius: Ironically this stereotype dates back to a time (think prior to Merchant of Venice) when Jews weren't allowed into the skilled guilds, like those of the blacksmith, the mason, the carpenter, etc. Jews turned to moneylending, jewelry and such as a way to earn a living. Surprise! They do well at it. And, a racist stereotype is born of a racist policy of exclusion.

    @Flippyjack: "Republican equals racist" may not be true. There are a probably a significant number of Republicans without racist beliefs. Unfortunately, "racist equals Republican" is very close to true and most of the other Republicans don't seem to have any trouble buddying up to them. In fact, the 'inclusive' attitude of the Republican party seems to begin and end with racists. #jimdemint
