Biden was the most inscrutable choice, ever, for VP. Instead of "change" Obama brought out an old hack, who had trouble with both truth telling, even during the campaign, and with inserting his foot into his mouth. Oh, to know what kind of negotiation that was, to get him on the ticket---except, perhaps to allay terrified old white guys who feared a woman and a (half)black man on the ticket would bring on the apocalypse. #joebiden

apparently I am in the minority, but I love Joe Biden! I think he's like the lovable Steve Urkel of the White House. He comes in, says stupid stuff, knocks shit over, and is like "Did I do that?" Oh Joe. #joebiden

Joe Biden is everything thats wrong and fucked up with congress. This dope won his seat in the Senate when he was 29 and has never had another job until being VP. He has learned about as much about how the country works from his perch in DC as Palin learned about Russia from staring at it. He is walking proof we need term limits.

And he doesn't drink. I don't trust people who don't drink, unless they've already been alcoholics. #joebiden

Why is it that I feel compelled to defend Gawker's subject matter against the editors/writers at least once a day lately?

Either this new crop of staff writers is utterly fucked, or the editorial direction has taken a nosedive, or both.

Is there some negative correlation between the quality of stories and the quality of AJAX/CSS? #joebiden

Not sure what point you're trying to make, Amrita... that you think Cheney's worldview makes some sense? That Cheney was initially popular, before everything he did brought his popularity rating to a low of 28%? I love it that Biden is willing to call a moron a moron. This is a ridiculous post. #joebiden

I'm absolutely NOT a supporter of ANYTHING Dick says... but, Good Lawwd, Biden, Bin Laden will always BE a part of the issue. I'm sorry, I guess if you had the prez saying this I could understand... but, uh, Joe? Nope.

That being said, why are we posting crap from Fox News anyway - I thought we weren't supposed to take this stuff seriously?

Love her. I know she's not to everyone's taste, but the people who say, "She's just not that funny" are themselves HILARIOUS to me! Mostly because I imagine those people as effete, sexless Victorian men quietly shocked by women, children, and servants of any gender who dare to express opinions. Hee.

@Glib and Bitchy: I had the word 'transubstantiate' in my vocabulary when I was 6 or 7, thanks to that song. Didn't know what it meant, but it sounded really hip when he sang it.

I'm pretty sure it was the songs of Tom Lehrer that set me on the path to DFH-style liberalism in the sixties. He was a genius, and funny as fuck.

I'm a huge Sarah fan but I'm getting tired of Catholic bashing. If I (brought up catholic) were to make jokes about jewish religion in any way, I would be considered a racist and an anti-semite. Jewish comedians can shit on anybody and are immune from backlash. Especially if they bring up the "H" bomb. This video's underlying message is that Catholics and the church don't give a shit about starving people. This joke implies a lot of bad things about Catholics. Maybe Sarah is using irony to make some point here but this kind of humor just taps into what really divides people. It actually crosses the line and makes me mad that she would joke that Catholics are willing to see people starve in Africa. I just see double standard. I could never make jokes about a Jewish holy figure or monument. Have any jewish religious figures, or organizations, ever helped non jewish people in Africa? Probably, but I'm going to guess that a LOT more catholics have. There are probably thousands of people working in Africa to help starving children. I'm going to guess that many or most are Christian or Catholic. I guess thats why this video from Sarah upsets me.

@beugenius: She isn't making fun of Catholics, per se. She is making fun of the papacy.

And arguing that Christian missionaries in Africa are without fault themselves is not only beside the point, but not necessarily true. It's thinly veiled religious imperialism.

@beugenius: I think that the fact that you refrain from jokes about Jewish holy figures likely has to do with the fact there is not a Jewish leader with the level of status afforded the Pope. If there were one living person even nominally in charge of all the Jews, I would tell you to please go nuts. Honestly, the idea of such a person seems so at odds with Jewish custom, it's not surprising Jewish comedians are fascinated enough to often go there.

Also, considering that there exist over one billion Roman Catholics, and about 15 million Jews, I absolutely believe you when you say that more Catholics have done aid work. It would be embarrassing if they HADN'T done a lot more aid work.

@beugenius: You don't HAVE to be Catholic to do good deeds. And Catholics have no monopoly on charity.

There are plenty of secular charity orgs, like Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders that don't have weird fairy tale issues about birth control or using condoms to prevent the spread of infectious disease.

And why a former Nazi Pope form Germany? Yes, I know, I know: he redeemed himself from a very brief period of being a member of the Third Reich.

But in case anyone hasn't noticed: the Catholics are predominantly from the Third World and this last selection makes the Vatican look very post-colonial. It's a typical Old Europe paternal-colonial mentality that caused them to ensure an African or Latin American pope was off the table. I find that creepy.

@beugenius: When you analyze it, comedy works when there is an underlying truth to it. SS's 'humor' is based on a lie, and therefore, not funny.

@Cunning_Linguist: Many Catholics forget that making fun of the papacy is hardly attacking Catholicism. And I agree with rajmahall, the idea of the Pope and the sovereign status of the Vatican provides endless joke fodder.

The comedy routines that are most likely to make me laugh so hard that I cry are about the Church. The South Park episodes with "The Catholic Boat, the miraculous statue and the boys taking First Communion are priceless. I howl whenever I hear George Carlin, Cheech Marin, or Don Novello do their bits on the Church. Why? Because as a not-terribly-devout Catholic in the 21st Century, I'm the first to admit that we believe in, and practice, some crazy shit.

@gawkimo: How does the term "post-colonial" apply to a universal church?

FYI, the Vatican bureaucracy doesn't elect the Pope, nor do the national churches; the College of Cardinals does that. The last time I looked, it was still a very Euro-American body, but depending on how long Benedict lives and who he appoints, that could change.

You make it sound like Benedict volunteered to be a Nazi, when nothing could be further from the truth. The Third Reich wasn't a club to which one applied for membership; teenage boys were required to join the Hitler Youth. (The boys in the White Rose resistance group were also in the HJ.)

It never ceases to amaze me that some people still haven't grasped this simple truth: the Third Reich was the legally-recognized government of Germany. By no stretch of the imagination does this excuse the evil of the Nazi leadership, but as I've said elsewhere, if you're going to make value judgements, at least understand some basic facts.
