I admit, I was rolling my eyes at the "31-year-old secret" and yet another drug-addled memoir.... but J.H.C. that she is alive in any form, drugged or not, is amazing. I'd have probably killed myself, unable to handle it.

I don't believe the story. She says that he rapes her until she consents. Which one is it? Then her plea to not demonize her father. Its kind of hard for people with any sort of moral compass to not demonize a man who rapes his own daughter. If she was trying to do anything but make money, she would have come out with the allegation(s) years ago. She's pretty much co-signing his tendencies by not coming forward with information. Either she has been involved in some serious mind programming hijinks (i.e. Satan worship scare of the 80's) or she's making up lurid details that cannot be substantiated.

@bens: How do you know she would have come clean years ago if this were true. I think most people who this has happened to NEVER come clean. I don't know if she's telling the truth or not, but it's pretty brave to come forward. She's sick in the head, he father was very sick in the head.

While not all drug addicts have been abused, a huge percentage of incest victims of incest become addicts. Over the course of three years working with incest survivors, I never came across a single one who didn't suffer from some sort of addiction and/or eating disorder. Not a single one.

@kdubya: Absolutely. It's also amazing how many women in the sex trade are survivors of incest. I think in six years we saw one woman who wasn't either disabled or an incest survivor, or both.

That woman willfully helped her husband kidnap and molest a child. Mackenzie was an adult woman, not living in her mother's home. Even if her mother suspected he was having a relationship with someone else, that does not mean she should automatically "know" it was her daughter. That's like saying, if my husband went out and beat someone up, I'm equally responsible.

@Swordfish: Mackenzie was apparently 19 when all of this went down, and just about to marry someone. I'm not sure the stepmother would fall under the umbrella of "accomplice" when the victim is financially independent, adult, and married. Not to mention chock full o'drugs.

Sadly- "Love one another" was not just a lyrical mantra of ideals in the 60's for some.

Knowing what I know, seeing what I have seen and being where I was as an innocent little girl, I am not surprised, nor do I think the night before the wedding was the first time her father creeped into bed with Mackenzie.

You would be amazed at how easy it is for a little girl to black out episodes of her life for the preservation of the soul.

@lil red: This is far from the first such story I've heard from people who grew up in that era. Not that anything like this happened to me, but as the child of hippies myself, and as someone who grew up around hippies, I can attest to the sometimes slippery personal boundaries of hippies. For some people, the permissive ideology of the time was just a cover for far more base impulses.

@lionel-mandrake: I grew up among the hippies too, and I saw everything that could be seen by the time I was four b/c the free love thing dictated that sex was beautiful and not to be hidden or something. even at the time it skeeved me out, and yeah, I could see that attitude + drugs + the narcissism inherent to the whole "do your own thing" ideology leading to shit like this.
