How's The Journalism Job Market?
We like to take stock of the journalism job market through the most obvious raw data: Job listings! This week, the Chicago bureau of the New York Times posted an ad for a reporter/office clerk/stringer. You should have: a minimum of a "few years" experience at a newspaper, and should be able to order office supplies while reporting other people's stories—and you should know that the "right applicant will care more about getting good stories and learning the craft than about the paycheck." So we're going with: The job market unrelentingly sucks. More » -

Laurel Touby's Dad Hates Gay Pimps
While doing a bit of research today, we were guided to this delightful essay from over the winter by new Mediabistro-selling millionairess Laurel Touby's dad, Frank Touby, who's a columnist up in Canadia.
Turn to the back pages of Now, or Toronto Star's sister publication Eye, or Quebecor's Toronto Sun, or some of the gay publications and you will see what whoremongers these unabashed corporations truly are. Their pages are rife with ads selling intimate sexual acts with girls and boys, women and men. These corporations are pimps by definition.
Oh, it goes on! A great lunch read.Newspapers pimp like biker gangs [Toronto Bulletin]

'Times' Building Farewell Party: "Like Dorkfest 2007"
Last evening, the staff of the New York Times bid their old building at 229 West 43rd St. one final farewell. Staffers were allowed to bring one guest and were asked to bring their own food and wine (beer and soft drinks were readily available), though it turned out that Pinch had sprung for a whole bunch of pizza. Whew. Our correspondent reports that Metro editor Joe Sexton has some sweet hip-hop moves. Get your head around that one. The full report follows! More » -

TimesSelect Is A Failure
TimesSelect, the world's stupidest pay-for-content bar to a good user experience, has 222,300 paying members as of May, according to a report just released by the Times. This is, we think, if our math is right, a gain of 4300 TimesSelect paying subscribers since April! (That's income of a little over $200K.) This is such a good business model that it's impossible to describe how great it is, because it actually just sucks. Really—has no one calculated the web ad income per page contrasted with the cost of Times Select? Oh my God, sorry, I just got all crazy-dull trade paper on you right there. Also announced today—internet advertising up, print ads down over last year at the Times overall. Surprise! "Ad revenues for the New York Times Media Group decreased 9.1%" compared to last May. I bet someone upstairs there is thinking that they should make their website all-pay to play. Genius!
