I like that adolescent males are more demure, not sending as many pix as girls.
...Or, today's adolescent males need to put down the Taco Bell Big Gulps? Either/or.
A friend & I had a disagreement about whether or not sexting etc is a good thing. My feeling is that it is anti-bohemian b/c it may police behavior, i.e., I can think of dozens of crazy nights in college that I would've been far more cautious about had I known Big Brother was recording me. (Polaroids are easier to control & you know when someone is taking them). And I wonder if only exhibitionist types participate in sexting etc.? My friend argued the opposite, that the current generation is far more open & free than we ever were - he also added that if people are indeed more cautious then maybe that's for the best. What do you think?
I still don't get why the AP and pretty much every news organization in the world is still talking about sexting and teens sending sexy photos and such.
Teenagers are curious about their bodies, don't understand boundaries and are just discovering the joys of sex.
If you hand them a device that allows them to create dirty pictures and send dirty notes of course they are going to do so.
When I was in high school the only reason we weren't having phone sex all the time is that your parents might hear you having phone sex. Now that it can be done silently it would be weird if kids weren't doing it.
As to the girls sending more pictures then the boys. I'm guessing there are three things going on here:
1. The girls just grew their tits and are proud of them. Of course they are going to want to show them off a bit. In 1985 this happened at Motley Crue shows instead of on the phone.
2. Boys are more likely to ask for naked pictures than girls are.
3. A lot of girls are less excited about seeing a wang than boys are about seeing tits.
4. Boys are more worried about their dicks being too small than girls are worried about their boobs being too small.
@drunkexpatwriter: It's just like you to promise three explanatory items, and then over-deliver by one.
Also, I find absolutely brilliant the suggestion that the internet is simply channeling everything that would, in 1985, have occurred at a Motley Crue concert. Finally, everything is illuminated.
@drunkexpatwriter: " In 1985 this happened at Motley Crue shows instead of on the phone." Ha, heart.
On a related, breaking AP news story, some disposable cameras were left on tables at a wedding, and a few naked bathroom pics ended up on them. Developing...
@tongue-tied: No, I just meant pics of the wedding guests. I always hear of disposable cameras at weddings that get filled up with pics people anonymously took of their own junk/ass, etc...or maybe that's just my family's friends.
@AzureTexan: We used to do the sexy talk on the old party line. We'd ask Mildred to connect us to the Wilson residence, ask to speak to Clarice then get with the sexy talk. Sure, sometimes people would listen in, but it's all we had. Well, that and dirty Western Union telegrams.
So now parents have to engage in massive group denial as a matter of public policy and when reviewing their little porn stars' MMS/SMS on the phone bill every month. I'd be surprised if the modern bible belt parent doesn't walk through a house full of laptops, cellphones, and scattered sexual paraphernalia screaming a constant hymn whilst wearing a sleeping mask and bumping into neighborhood kids bumping into each other.

As for the tits thing- agreed. For me, the first time I saw naked boobs was much more memorable than the first time I had sex.

If cell phones had been around when I was in junior high school, half the globe would have seen my dick or beaver.
Best we could do was a poloroid and that wasn't fun.
At every function that involved en masse, "Show us your boobs!" was the war cry.
