I absolutely love it whenever someone like this is called "not a bad man."
• I knew a guy who beat his girlfriend, and his friends called him a "good guy."
• I had a friend of a friend get divorced because her husband was in debt to some loan sharks AND he didn’t spend time with his family. And he was "not a bad guy."
• I knew some other guy who would sleep with co-workers, steal their clients, and find ways to push the women out of the office. Verdict? "He was ambitious but a good guy."
You know what? Someone acts like an a-hole call them an a-hole. I'm tired of hearing idiots who destroy the lives of others called "good" or have excuses tossed their way.
I do not necessarily excuse Letterman's behavior, but he is a millionaire who is probably buried in hot young women who want a piece of that. I don't know that I would not have a moment of weakness under the same circumstances. Halderman, on the other hand, seems to be a prototypical power-abusing creep in the entertainment industry. I am sorry that Dave succumbed to temptaion once or twice, but he is not the bad guy here.
@ZahidRizza: 6 of one, half-dozen of the other. They're both men of power who took advantage of the plethora of young women eager to get a foothold in the TV industry. Dave's got a lot more money and name recognition, but in the grand scheme of things I don't think they're so different.
@SybilDisobedience: And by "took advantage of" I don't mean to imply that they manipulated women or used them callously, just that they had the opportunity to sleep with multiple women and they took it. The women they slept with were equal partners in the give and take, I'm sure.
@SybilDisobedience: equality is a tricky thing in workplace/power relationshiops. even if the younger, less established, less powerful, less wealthy person believes they are acting freely, when there are consequences or if there is fallout, the outcomes are rarely symmetrical
@if_i_only_had_a_heart: Yes, I agree. Didn't mean to imply that the players in the game are necessarily on a level field, professionally or personally - one of them usually has a lot more to lose even if they have less distance to fall in the public eye. I was just trying to clarify that I wasn't calling Letterman or Haldermann rapists in so many words.
Gah, I don't know what it is about those douchebag mid-life crisis goatees these kinda guys grow, but it is not a surprise to see he has one. Srsly, let's just leave that for Robert Goulet.
I knew this was personal, I bet it's because Stephanie called out Dave's name during sex. Sex, this guy, David Letterman, Stephanie Birkett, it's an eww fest.
whoa! grown-ups hook up with other adults from work? in spite of company policies, and the generally poor ethics of sleeping with someone you supervise? i hope they aren't drinking alcohol on their lunch hours, too.

Guess I've been working at the wrong places. Never once even remotely been attracted to one of my bosses.
