And I actually personally know two people, both 20-something college grads, who just interviewed for the AP's summer internship, too.
That they laid off so many veterans is no surprise. It's an easy way to hire more "employees" for less money and obligation. You don't get health benefits or severance pay when you're just a longtime "intern," after all.
@Sergio Hernandez: Huge expansions with "freelancers' is what the entire news business did in the -80s and the internet wasn't even invented yet. It was so blatantly and egregiously an effort to avoid paying fair wages and offering decent benefits that the Labor Dept busted a lot of them for it.

I too once dabbled in the funemployment game, my friends. I spent the better part of 6 months laying in the sun, taking some acting classes, creeping out young college girls... gnawing on beef-steaks.
Then the money ran out.
Long story short, now I'm a crusty old fart with clogged arteries who hangs out in front of sorority houses flashing my cock.
I like how Mr. Joegriner is considering taking a night job stocking shelves, so people wouldn't see him, but he'll do an interview with the WSJ. #funemployment
@cassandra: Why would you doubt it? People who were laid off were given severance. That severance is running out and people are starting to come to grips with real life. They probably expected to be back at work already. It's not really a stretch. #funemployment
@cassandra: Leaving aside the idea that - gasp - portions of the population might not all move in lockstep (CIP, the shorts will get rich in a crash), the point of Pilon's story is that there are SOME people who were able to continue living as they always did on severance - until that severance runs out. Not saying that they're going all out (by their standards) or that everyone is overspending (by our standards.) #funemployment
@Valerie Flame: The point seems to be that you can find at least five people, anywhere, doing something stupid and then call it a trend. #funemployment
back in the dot-com day, there were pinkslip partays and some list named Albert's or Armando's or someone who ensured that the few remaining parties were emailed to you so you could plan to eat and drink for free while wallowing in your useless stock-option sorrows #funemployment
What was fun about the Pink Slip parties was there were still plenty of ways to collect severance on Friday and start a new gig on Monday, or maybe after 3 weeks of vacay. #funemployment
@If_I_Had_a_Poodle: funny, I thought I had "MADE IT BIG" when he added me to his exclusive vip list...then I met him in person, what a let down...I wonder if he sold his list for a kagillian dollars before it became a list of unemployed people with no money to spend? #funemployment
@BettyCrocker: Of course, it's just a Navy town full of young sailors just back from months at sea and prowling the boardwalk looking for action. Frankly, what's the attraction there? #funemployment
@BettyCrocker: as Patti Smith sang: "can't you see the glitter, the glitter in their eyes?" then the little robots sing in unison: "Every night before I rest my head
See those dollar bills go swirling 'round my bed.
I know they're stolen, but I don't feel bad.
I take that money, buy you things you never had.
Oh, baby, it would mean so much to me,
Oh, baby, to buy you all the things you need for free.
I'll buy you a jet plane, baby,
Get you on a higher plane to a jet stream
And take you through the stratosphere
And check out the planets there and then take you down
Deep where it's hot, hot in Arabia, babia, then cool, cold fields of snow
And we'll roll, dream, roll, dream, roll, roll, dream, dream.
When we dream it, when we dream it, when we dream it,
We'll dream it, dream it for free, free money,
Free money, free money, free money, free money, free money, free money. " #funemployment
Since when was Virginia Beach considered tony? Everyone I know from VA speaks of it the way you speak of burned out Detroit - at your own risk. I even got food poisoning from one of the many all-you-can-eat seafood buffets on my last visit and was too scared to visit their hospital. #funemployment
I'll bet Mr. Hipsher's old cleaning lady is having a big ol' laugh right about now. she's the only one out of the whole lot who still has a job. "See you at the Sizzler Mr . and Mrs. Hipsher" #funemployment
Love how the WSJ keeps out high-earning execs out of their story to avoid fanning the populist flames against the $2m/year execs who'll be continuing to tauntingly wave at the proles on the way to play golf.
Instead, they focus on middle/upper-middle class execs, making it seem like the Severance Class is almost like Joe Sixpack. #funemployment
@Trai_Dep: BREAKING: Bourgeoisie acts in ways that affirm their standing as members of the bourgeoisie. Scandalous behavior such as Starbucks coffee and networking to ensue, and also continuance of a child's education. News at 11. #funemployment
I love you! This does make me feel better, although, I was never unemployed, but can't find a job as a new law grad in the first place. I guess I'm jealous of unemployment check-receivers too. . .
@becca.ichiban: Aww, I feel your pain, that was me in 2003! A couple of friends started work at large firms, but the rest of us were sitting home watching Dawson's Creek reruns and trying to get through the entire day on $5 or less. I finally got my first real lawyer job in February 2004 and have been working ever since. All I can say is it really really sucks, but try to enjoy it whenever possible cause eventually you'll find a job and wish you were back on that couch flipping channels and eating ramen noodles. #funemployment
Off topic housekeeping question: on commenter profile pages, I see the total numbers of friends and followers shows a wrong number, yet all the friends/followers are still listed. Weird. #funemployment

Of course they went for the olds. Old=expensive. Never mind the experience, skill, institutional knowledge, value, etc
