    And I actually personally know two people, both 20-something college grads, who just interviewed for the AP's summer internship, too.

    That they laid off so many veterans is no surprise. It's an easy way to hire more "employees" for less money and obligation. You don't get health benefits or severance pay when you're just a longtime "intern," after all.

    @Sergio Hernandez: Huge expansions with "freelancers' is what the entire news business did in the -80s and the internet wasn't even invented yet. It was so blatantly and egregiously an effort to avoid paying fair wages and offering decent benefits that the Labor Dept busted a lot of them for it.

    Then the money ran out.

    @cassandra: Why would you doubt it? People who were laid off were given severance. That severance is running out and people are starting to come to grips with real life. They probably expected to be back at work already. It's not really a stretch. #funemployment

    @cassandra: Leaving aside the idea that - gasp - portions of the population might not all move in lockstep (CIP, the shorts will get rich in a crash), the point of Pilon's story is that there are SOME people who were able to continue living as they always did on severance - until that severance runs out. Not saying that they're going all out (by their standards) or that everyone is overspending (by our standards.) #funemployment

    Since when was Virginia Beach considered tony? Everyone I know from VA speaks of it the way you speak of burned out Detroit - at your own risk. I even got food poisoning from one of the many all-you-can-eat seafood buffets on my last visit and was too scared to visit their hospital. #funemployment

    @becca.ichiban: Aww, I feel your pain, that was me in 2003! A couple of friends started work at large firms, but the rest of us were sitting home watching Dawson's Creek reruns and trying to get through the entire day on $5 or less. I finally got my first real lawyer job in February 2004 and have been working ever since. All I can say is it really really sucks, but try to enjoy it whenever possible cause eventually you'll find a job and wish you were back on that couch flipping channels and eating ramen noodles. #funemployment
