If it stops a certain acquaintance of mine from replacing her Facebook avatar with YouthJuice or the logo of the latest restaurant she's got the account for, I'm all for it.

But really, I just think that the pastoral paradise of Canuckistan should brace itself for an influx, as the entire blogging industry crosses the border to settle in a more industry-positive, can-do nation.

But y'all can keep Perez Hilton, k?

Spot on. Newspapers are private entities with inherent potential for conflicted, biased interests, already (which, let's face it, most if not all of them have). This'll push privately funded news further from or towards partisanship and corporate interests worse than what goes down now, depending on who's lining their pockets that year. With a lot less shame, too. The subsequent punditry and time that'll be dedicated to newspaper-on-newspaper call-outs and letting the government fuck the fourth estate via carrot-and-the-stick incentive-fueled "reporting" will just distract from issues that actually do need to be investigated. This is just bad.

I felt a little sick to my stomach reading this story. This smacks of creeping socialism.

Is anyone who complains that their industry is doing poorly going to receive a bailout? Is this what we've come to? In order for markets to work, there has to be a risk of failure. Without failure new growth companies and new growth sectors will be stifled and subdued.

I can't help but think this is akin to the milkmen of the world begging for a government handout.

@DannyOcean: A financial bailout, while bad, is a lot less scary than major policy changes that privilege newspapers over other forms of information dissemination.

@Better to Eat You With: I agree completely. That's what I'm saying. The financial bailout made at least a little sense because if the financial system collapsed, things would get very fucked, very quickly. It'd be BAD.

But then automakers got a bailout. And now newspapers want one. And those two sectors are not in the same boat as finance. If this happens I will have a physical reaction and probably be ill. Markets have to allow failure for real growth to ever occur. We can't just throw money at failing companies.
