I'm a Brit, but I bloody loved it, and I've never been a massive Tarantino fan (Jackie Brown aside). Shame about it shoring up Weinstein, but do go and see! It's unique.
Uh, uh... didn't Denby gush over Funny People and that horrible Nazi killer movie with Liev Schreiber? 'nuff said. As for Edelstein, "an ungainly pastische" doesn't sound like an unvarnished rave. I think I need to see this before coming to any conclusion.
@Spirit Fingers: From what I've seen of the Inglourious Basterds trailers, I think Brad was channeling Dale Dye's portrayal of Colonel Sink in Band Of Brothers . . .
I've seen the trailer so many times now that I find it annoying, especially Brad Pitt's southern accent "My name is lieutenant Aldo Ray, and I need me eight soldiers"
@bluebears: I think it got fairly positive, if slightly mixed reviews. Volume 2 definitely received more acclaim, which makes sense because I think a lot of people weren't expecting that depth (yes, depth) after Volume 1. I heard Ebert say at UC Boulder that the two combined created one of the best cinematic experiences of the past 10 years.
@Banjo-Sea Kitten: Not to be pedantic, but there are actually two on-purpose typos, though you wouldn't know it from this Defamer post, which incorrectly spells Inglourious correctly.
I think Todd McCarthy's movie-reviewing style is extremely ripe for a close deconstructive reading, and I recommend this task to Defamer.
For instance I suspect there's a lot of mileage in the bottomless existential question, "When has a Todd McCarthy view ever deviated from kneejerk, analysis-free, conventional wisdom in any way?"
