    This wasn't a suicide, clearly. He was murdered. You don't have to be on CSI to figure this one out. Bankers don't keep boxcutters around, as someone else on here mentioned. He was doped and cut and left to die.

    To some extent our entire economy is a Ponzi scheme. How can oil be worth $140 a barrel one day and $40 a year later?


    Or my house be worth $400,000 one day and $300,000 a year later?

    Crazy theory time: He had life insurance and he killed himself in order to give his wife something to live on? (I'm assuming that the proceeds couldn't be used to meet a future judgment.)


    There's no good here, but maybe there's a hint of slightly less bad.

    @Seeräuber Jenny: Not that I've looked into it or anything but I am fairly sure most life insurance policies do not pay out in the case of suicide.

    It depends. Often there's a clause that doesn't permit payment if the insured commits suicide, say, within two years. That's to keep people from taking out a policy and promptly killing themselves.

    @18thCFox: Well, in the '29 crash buildings had windows that opened. Now most modern buildings have sealed windows, so I suppose suicides have to be more creative.

    So, Madoff is under house arrest, right? This being the holiday season, wouldn't it be kind of fitting to go carolling under his window? And then storm the building with burning pikes and drag him out and feed him to the rats in the sewers?
