This is actually kind of amazing if you're familiar with the history of the Pabst brand. It's value was next to nothing when it was bought back in the 90s. Basically a group of investor just bought what was a more or less defunct brand for peanuts. Then they smartly paid other people to brew the product and went around snapping up other old school beer brands. All the while increasing their sales without any investment in marketing.

    Very savvy and/or lucky.

Maybe the Weinstein Co. will buy it, let it lose value, and then sell it to some enterprising and naive European royal. #hipsters

A hipster with a trust fund is more likely to have $300 mil than a dude with an actual job.

The sad thing is that within living memory (at least, living memory of us middle-aged geezers) Newsday was the very model of what a smart and brave local paper could be: good writing, good investigative coverage of its market, and adequate coverage of the national and international news. It's a classic case of a newspaper company dumbing down a paper and finally destroying everything that connected it to its readers. #theinternet

@TheBusinessGuy: Well put -- though I am not ready to write off the paper as the only real source for Long Island related news (and features).
It's a shadow of what it once was but still better than nothing and I want it to survive. That's part of what makes the lame, unapproachable web site so disappointing, for what it says about management's judgment and level of talent and about the paper's financial future. #theinternet

@naugahydeinplainsight: Thanks for the compliment. And how awful is it that we have reached a point where a once-great paper's slogan can now be "It's Better Than Nothing." See, Newsday once wanted to be good because there was honor in a newspaper being good; they were better than they had to be. Now, they are like kosher food: often lousy and always expensive because they have a captive audience. #theinternet

Newsday.com's "new" design is very 1997. It's like the gals at wowowow went crazay with fonts, slow load times and mugshots.

However, it's free for Optimum clients, so there's that.

Frankly, this rag has such a conservatard slant that it's like The Post with listings for pumpkin farms and tag sales. #theinternet

Hmmm. Five dollars a week to read a web site with white print on a black background that looks like it was laid out by a merry internet prankster. I think I’ll pass. #theinternet

@Nesbiteme: Thank god I'm not the only one who found their recent redesign offensive. Of course their news-lite approach to content means even if you can penetrate the visuals it's pretty hard to find anything to read. #theinternet
