    Hmmm, I think you forgot the option where you have a drunken one night stand with someone who looks like John Mayer when he's trying to hit a high note, who you picked up at McFadden's, only to fall asleep during missionary and have him awkwardly stay the night because the LIRR train back to his place in Massapequa doesn't run 24 hours.

    In my 38 years, I have spent exactly one Violence-Time Day with a boy. There were a few relationships that were happening Feb. 1, but not by the 14th. This one, I was in NYC, he was in Paris. I flew to Paris to be with him. We had a great night, got wasted, played pool, had crazy sex. The next day I went for lunch with girlfriends, and when I got back to the hotel (he had roommates) all that was there was a note.


    So this year, I'm thinking, cool. I've been seeing a guy since May. Not madly in love with him, but he's the nicest guy I've ever, ever gone out with and totally adores me and we always have fun together. I was trying to think of creative things to do, even though Violence-Time Day isn't that big a deal here (I have since moved to Paris -- NOT because of Boy #1). Then last week my current amour was arrested for not having legitimate papers to be here. He found out tonight he is being deported at 8 a.m. tomorrow.


    Poor guy. He got in the way of the universe's determination to make me miserable and bitter all my life.

    I plan on working that morning, then going home to a boyfriend who will have forgotten it was valentines day completely, getting a bit pissy for a about 15 minutes till I remember it's an irrelevant day designed to get people spending money on food and booze and candy they don't really need to get sex they didn't really have to work so hard to get.
    Then we'll engage in some less-than-exciting fornicating and go to sleep.
    Damn, we sound married already.

    you could do what I did a decade and a half ago, and run around whipping candy hearts at people while shouting "HAPPY FUCKING VALENTINE'S DAY". and remember - aim for the forehead.

    I am attending an "equal opportunity matrimonial event" downtown. Internet-ordained ministers will be on hand to perform your marriage to whomever- or whatever!- you like. Your best friend, your favorite bag, a dead actor, etc. They will also be available throughout the evening for marriage counseling, divorces and remarriages. After much consideration, I settled on wedding my Blackberry. It never lets me down and I will not cheat on it with an IPhone. I will write my vows, it will write its vows, which will be spoken back to me through Voice Notes. And then I will carry it over the threshold.
    This is all completely true.
