    Saw Waits on Letterman long long ago. Letterman was asking him stupid talk show questions. Waits told him "My mother was an exhaust manifold and my father was a tree." Letterman did not know what to do with this.

    "Los Angeles I'm Yours" by the Decemberists is not so bad.


    As for Tom Waits, who knows. God knows I've tried to like him, but I have listened to a ton of his songs and have literally never found one I like. At some point, I just gave up. If you like him, good for you. I don't.

    As far as I know Tom Waits has always been the subject of much critical and fan adulation. At least for the 30-some years I've been aware of, and listening to, his work.


    It would be ironic to listen to Tom Waits, if he say, sang for Loverboy way back when. That would be ironic. But he didn't, so it's not.


    Perhaps your understanding of irony is incorrect.


    That said, I prefer the maudlin "Drunken Bowery Bum" Small Change era Tom Waits to the post-Swordfish Trombones "Avant Garde" Tom Waits. But his later period stuff is pretty swell nonetheless.
