This made me inexplicably sad. Perhaps it's just that some asshole rang my buzzer at 5:30 this morning and I can't sleep anyway and this snow! Anyway, it all seems both wonderful and entirely intolerable.

Because the idea of "New York" has died.*

*I'll be crass in stating that 1998, and, in particular, 2006 unleashed the mouth-breathing masses onto the city, looking to find a place for them. Those who made it, congratulations. Those that didn't, get the fuck on. Those two years, specifically, lent me mornings of seeing fresh grads crying into the shoulder of their Patagonia's, trying to decipher the "how" and "why" aspect of their lives. Things were far too easy during those times, and the juniors not only ravaged the city with their voting power, but also prolonged the "I'm extremely important, and have a great deal to offer this world" thinking. I love New York because Entitlement is Finally Fucking Dying.

P.S. I really enjoyed my cigarette tonight with the 30mph winds and intense snow drifts, you bags of fuck. Our bars fucking suck.

Maple syrup? Have you been in the vicinity of 30 Rock in the springtime? Streets and San is spraying vanilla to cover the olfactory wow of the bums' urine. That does not smell like maple syrup to me.

    Otherwise, numbers 17, 45, 60, 78 and 85. And 91. Fabulous.

I have yet to see someone naked in Times Square and the Naked Cowboy does NOT count.

No mention of Channel One? No other city has anything like it. Chicago's CLTV is close, but no cigar.

Oh, and regarding Uniqlo -- please check out [www.uniqlo.jp] It's not set in NYC and yet it's delicious.

@The One: Mmm, good question... Gotta go with Mike's Bistro and Va Bene. The food at Prime Grill is great but the service is horrible, and Tevere 84 is objectively good but I don't like Italian food. I will say, though--NYC is sorely lacking in good kosher Chinese, so, still not perfect.

@DahlELama: Thanks for the info. I guess I never heard of these because we're downtowners.

For kosher Chinese, have you tried Buddha Bodai? Also, I'm pretty sure that Wild Ginger is kosher.

@The One: My favorite kosher restaurant downtown is Madras Cafe; it literally turned me on to Indian food.

I've never been to Buddha Bodai; I prefer meat in my Chinese so I haven't been to many of the vegan places. Never heard of Wild Ginger, but the menu on the website seems to have shellfish in the dishes so sadly that doesn't qualify!

@DahlELama: Oh yes, Madras Cafe is awesome! We had them cater at least one party at our (Orthodox) synagogue!

I'm pretty sure that Wild Ginger is vegan, at least the one on Broome St. is, so if there was anything like shellfish on the menu, it was faux.

I've had the "chicken" lo mein at Buddha Bodai, and it was better than most of the actual chicken lo mein I've had.

@The One: Ah, seems there are two different Wild Gingers...anyway, I'm sure it's good, but fake meat kind of freaks me out. You don't ever see meat pretending to be soy, do you? I feel compelled to stick with the real thing, Jonathan Safran Foer be damned.

I think this post is off-putting, btw, because Gawker's "voice" as a blog, as a whole, has moved so far away from the very Manhattan-centric feel it had at first. I pretty much hated this site when I first discovered it in 2005 (after Coen linked a blog I had then), but started loving it a lot within a year or so, as more bloggers were added and the subjects covered were more diverse.

This is a wonderful idea, even if the inaugural vintage post chosen is incredibly off-putting to anyone who doesn't live in New York City. (Mind you, I LOVE NY, too. But it's still off-putting.)
