I figured they were having a fight. Why else would he be pulling out of his driveway at 2 am and, obviously, his wife knew he was leaving the house? He sure wasn't sneaking out. Regarding the charges that his wife scratched his face and bashed his car with a golf club in order to purposely harm him or the car - I say innocent until proven guilty. I'd like to hear the whole story before I draw those conclusions.
Things were getting a little too hot, she lashed out, he left, and she followed and continued her attack. Clearly she's in the wrong here. No question, unless he struck her first... but since no one's reporting any physical abuse that she's suffered, it seems she's the aggressor. Yeah, cheating is a shitty thing to do, but it isn't illegal, and doesn't warrant being physically assaulted. And some of the double standard business I'm seeing on this thread is ridiculous. Urgh. Being a wronged woman does not justify physical violence. And yah, the whole golf club thing just ups the ante into felony assault with the intent to do serious bodily harm.
If it went down as speculated, hopefully Tiger can overcome the stigma and speak out truthfully today. Assault is still assault, but it takes a "bigger" person who is larger and stronger to succumb to a good few licks without retaliating, while possibly attempting to restrain an attacker, or riding it out in measured control until you can walk away. No shame in that.
If the tables were turned and Tiger had scratched his wife's face up then chased her with a golf club causing her to crash her car, he would probably be sitting in jail. True, there is some celebrity worship going on but mostly there is a double standard when it comes to domestic violence committed by women. The police are not taking her actions seriously b/c she is a woman and he is a cheating prick. Everyone just figures he deserved it.
The police clearly don't want to investigate this case or get involved at all. When the police came to interview Tiger the first time the wife told them he was sleeping and they just left! If she were a he, there is no way they would have been all "Sure, we can come back at another time. No problem".
I'm slightly amazed at the comments to my comments.
I was in no way justifying domestic violence (See School of Obviousness).
But from the School of Commonsense and Knowledge of Nasty Spousal Relations, I can tell you that, assuming what people surmise is correct:
A very attractive, still young woman, i.e., still wants to preserve her looks, who is the mother of young children, i.e., wants to protect her tender offspring, does not wail on her super-successful, multimillionaire, celebrity husband who's been rumored to have been a non-stop Lothario/Don Juan for just nothing.
The reactions to your original post were all clearly heavy handed given Tiger is a big boy who can take care of himself. Trying to use the relationship of the richest athlete in the world to make generalizations about domestic abuse is kind of ridiculous. None of us know the true dynamics of this relationship.
@Seeräuber Jenny: I'm not stating it did happen. I am stating that your comment that if domestic violence did occur, it's fine because someone *said* something that's worth a physical response.
It's would not be acceptable because it happens on a daily basis.
Elin, this is NOT how you secure a favorable divorce settlement. Come the fuck on, now. You don't even have to hire a private dick to look into Tiger's infidelity. TMZ is doing it for you. Just wait, then win. That's all there is to it.
@TheBusinessGuy: Hell-oooooo ball. One of the greatest lines in the history of comedy. By the way, those who want to know the secret to long professional looking shots...it is all about generating club head speed.
There needs to be MUCH MORE hazing of that new kid for reporting the spin as fact. Great Jumping Jesus, there are not enough eyerolls in the God damned world for that shit. *storms away, muttering* Gawker, this is fucking Gawker fer Chrissakes...
@the supergoddess: Breathe, J, breathe. Sometimes, we can't ignore a story, and you want to suss out what we have without jumping way past the gun. Ravi's good people, I promise, he's worthy of a coveted lemon square. Also, I'm trying to purport the Caddyshack-Gopher Theory, so, you know, there's that.
@Matt Cherette: No offense to your mom, but I think everyone crowing "called it" on this one should probably step off. Anyone possessing even the slightest capacity for critical thought knew that the "she busted his rear window to pull him from the wreckage" story was a steaming pile of wet horseshit from the moment it was introduced. Dude was driving a huge SUV at a slow rate of speed and the impact of the crash didn't even set off the airbags, so, I mean, COME ON. So again, those boasting about being the second-coming of Nancy Drew need to chill.
However, on the flip side, people who read that story and bought it without having an internal Drudge siren going off in their heads should probably just go out and drown themselves in the first Port-O-Potty they come across, because life is just going to sodomize their souls continuously until it finally puts them out of their misery.
@The Cajun Boy: I totally agree. The thing that was really bugging me was that many news outlets were still regurgitating the "hero" wife spin at 11:00pm west coast time

He said something. It was probably outrageous.

And a good weekend to all.

We don't even know what happened, how can you possibly say that?
People lose their tempers and it devolves into physical violence all the time. It would be better if it didn't, but ithas been known to happen.
What was said does matter.
Personally, assuming that what's been reported is accurate, I am not particularly mystified.

And comon, do we really think that the sports superstar plus drop dead gorgeous wife are a "true" couple?
Yeah, I'm sure if he wasn't Tiger Woods and she wasn't beautiful, eHarmony would totally match them up.

Judge Smails: You know, you should play with Dr. Beeper and myself. I mean, he's been club champion for three years running and I'm no slouch myself.
Ty Webb: Don't sell yourself short Judge, you're a tremendous slouch.

One thing I'm amazed by: Elin turned state troopers away for questioning TWICE? There's an element of rich-guy privilege here.
