    I am having a hell of a time trying to articulate my thoughts on the subject, but I'm pretty sure they amount to this:
    1) Orthodox Jews believe that one is a Jew only if they have a Jewish mother. The mother can be a convert, so long as she has undergone an Orthodox conversion.
    2) The family suing the school is not Orthodox. They consider themselves Jewish, and well they should--they're not Orthodox and have no reason to subscribe to the Orthodox definition.
    3) JFS does not seem to be an Orthodox institution, so why are they making judgments about who's eligible for their school based on the Orthodox definition? #thejews

    @uncivilly obedient: Is it? I can't seem to find evidence of that anywhere except for the Wikipedia sidebar, though it's not anywhere in the general information. I don't see it on the website either, they don't seem to teach Gemara, the kids don't wear kippahs, and the Jewish studies curriculum seems very general. Plus, all the frum kids I know from London went to Immanuel. #thejews

    @uncivilly obedient: I still don't see it, but I'll take your word for it! Regardless, I don't see the Orthodox bent in the name, dress, or education, so I'm not really sure why adhering to the "rules" of Orthodoxy seemed so necessary in this case. I just hate any attitude that's unwelcoming to converts; it's a really sore point of mine, despite having no occurrences of conversion in my family (to the best of my knowledge). #thejews

    @DahlELama: I agree with you regarding the need to be welcoming to converts, but the school as well as Lord Jonathan Sacks don't view the mother as a legitimate convert. #thejews

    Kind of an aside, but I saw Fran Drescher at an auction viewing Saturday. I wasn't sure it was her, she looked impossibly young and gorgeous. 35, tops. Then I heard her speak (in her normal voice) to her art gay. In real life, she is one beautiful Jewess. Lovely. #thejews
