Yeah, its so sad. Those lucky fuckers who have "union protection" (whatever the hell that means), really can never feel the pain of those who must now go nanny-less.

The smug, self-satisfied and vaguely confused look on his face displeases me.

"What is a laid-off lawyer to do?"

I don't know. Get a shitty replacement job with no benefits like everyone else? Who is this doughy turd?

What's a laid-off lawyer to do? Mark, tell your friends that the soaps air in a bloc throughout the afternoon (The Young and the Restless starts at 12:30, just when you should be rolling out of bed) and Oreos are on sale for $2.50!

It's undeniable that law firms are laying people off and I'm sure it's a bit of a shock. But he is so damned condesending.

Plus, he talks about the unionized blue collar middle-class workers who are struggling but what about the fucking working poor who have always been struggling? Why doesn't he compare his fancy lawyers to this group of people? Where's his sympathy for my friend who can't afford health care but also doesn't qualify for any benefits for himself and just some for his wife and children?

I have sympathy for people who have recently gone from a lot to a little. But there are people out there who have always had a little, and who still have less than you. So shut the fuck up, whiny riches.

The quoted paragraph identifies lawyers, but it describes many professionals (e.g., engineers, architects). But I guess Penn only knows lawyers...

Also, lawyers "had all of their savings in the stock and housing markets." You mean like everyone else that owns (part of) a home, has a 401k, and a mutual fund or two?

    Lawyers, they're just like us.

@CaptainFantastic: Except that while several of my laid off friends received about two weeks of severance, Latham coughed up six months worth. Just goes to show--even when they're like us, they still end up on top.

@DahlELama: A lot of law firms ask their attorneys to resign, rather than terminating them, in order to hide their layoffs. As a result, they can't collect unemployment. So they have to give a severance or tell people they expect a resignation by a date a few months later.

Maybe the laid-off lawyer can sue Mark Penn for libel.

Those poor people. If only they had the financial safety nets, inexpensive tastes, and broadly applicable educational background of today's blue collar worker.
