Could it be that this was just a test? They want to see who's paying attention? Or maybe just calibration... to find out how careful they need to be to fool *all* of the people all of the time?

I couldn't understand why they hired a guy from Portugal by way of London to take mediocre photos in the States to begin with. And to say they weren't doctored, good grief, they are too mundane to photoshop.

@Dave J.: no doubt to cover up some perceived flaw. Maybe there was a big hole in the wall on the right side of the image above. Or a big stain on the floor. These are abandoned buildings; they're not generally going to look this perfect. And for some reason, this guy wanted them to look perfect. They probably would have looked better in terms of "interestingness" if he'd have left them alone.

The thing I'm struck with after looking at all of those is: gah, you retouched the photos for THAT? I mean, a couple leaves? A light switch? For reals? None of those elements made me completely change my worldview, a la "well, I was a big believer in credit default swaps, but OMFG THOSE TWO LEAVES THERE ARE FUCKING UP THAT PARADIGM." Why retouch such unimportant elements of the photos? I don't get it.

What I'm more surprised by is how amateurish the photoshopping jobs were. Some of the linked to articles make reference to it being silly for people to do this in this age, since don't they know they will get caught. A decent manipulation of these images would have masked all of these imperfections, and no one would be able to tell.

The point is, don't believe anything you see anymore.

@ModernDemagogue2: There's nothing that could have covered up these manipulations. You just straight up cannot mirror things in photos. Anyone that does that is going to get caught. Ditto for cloning.

There are manipulations that you can get away with. Even putting somebody else's head on a person's body can be undetectable if it's done really, really well. But duplicating parts of the same image is just never going to fly. There's no way to make that undetectable.
