Wouldn't it be great if there were a way to distribute these messages to anyone who wanted to read them? And do it for free?

    Oh, right.

In reply to The 99th Percentile Bowl: 2009's Harvard-Yale Game, A Compiled Air-to-Ground Report
Here's the dirty little secret: there's nothing particularly glamorous about being an Ivy League grad. (I didn't go to Harvard or Yale, but have 2 Ivy degrees, with lots of relatives/friends/co-workers who are Ivy grads.) If you look at us (not just me, but my cohort, in our 40s), you'd probably call us successful.

But we're not Kennedys or Bushes. We tend to make decent money, but we're still dealing with mortgages, trying to avoid getting fat, filling out paperwork all day, figuring out who's going to drive the kids to soccer practice, wondering if we're going to end up divorced, trying to keep our values and our sanity intact.

I want to my alma mater's game Saturday. Game sucked, but beautiful weather, and a nice way to spend some time with my kids. It's nice to reminisce; I had a good college experience.

But Sunday when I did the grocery shopping, no one at the store cared where I went to college. Today I'm back at work, which is alternately boring and interesting, just like always. It's not any different from my friends and neighbors who went to State U, Adequate Catholic University with Famous Athletic Program, or Liberal Arts College You've Never Heard Of.

This isn't meant to be a whine; I recognize that I've got a pretty good life, particularly on the monetary side. But if going to an Ivy League school was as wonderful as Kamer makes it seem, why are so many of us wasting time commenting on Gawker?

I follow John Chow, in part because he's a funny, smart guy and in part because I generally bump into him once a week at least at some Social Media Gabfest. Whatever else he is, he's a brilliant man.

He is absolutely the most unabashed capitalist you will ever meet, and that includes the entire staff and management of Haliburton. His "Black Hat Tips for Making Money Online" talk last year at WordCamp Fraser Valley was jaw-dropping. The tagline of his blog is "I make money online teaching people to make money online." And it's true.

It's kind of like watching Conrad Black...you can't help but be fascinated, even if you hate yourself for watching.

I'm surprised, actually, he put the (ad) on there. Most of the ads I get are either DM spam from people who are too dim to realize their accounts are compromised because they gave their password to "get your blog's birth sign" apps OR they're not identified as ads. Kudos to him for doing it, and no, it's not going to cost him any followers. His crowd just wants to know how they get that deal (kinda like Gawker reporting on Emily's book).

Ironically, of John Chow's 50,000 followers bombarded with ads, 20% are spambots with photos of hot girls for avatars.

    And the cycle continues...

In reply to The 99th Percentile Bowl: 2009's Harvard-Yale Game, A Compiled Air-to-Ground Report
Smithhimself was at The Game on the Yale side. A cheerful day with the usual drinking that continued at the Elizabethan Club. Compared to watching Nebraska or Florida play football, the Ivy League is really... well, it's high school level sports activity. But the sky was blue, my shirt was blue and, yes, a good time was had by all.

I would say that one aspect of the contest is not false. I truly do believe that Harvard is a vile institution.
