@triplethreat: word. a grade school classmate of mine was stabbed to death by a fellow student in veterinary school. yes, veterinary school. it was reported that she refused his advances. add to that the fact that "campus police" have been known to keep many crimes against co-eds (quaint term, i know) within their "jurisdiction", and it's near-on impossible to estimate how huge this threat really is. #uclastabbing
Last year at USC some dumbass fool ran a red light and slammed into two students. One was killed, the other was dragged under the car and then removed and the people drove off.
I know everything doesn't have to be Emily Dickinson, but do we really need the fuckity-fucking-fuck-fuck? Is that how we're adding drama to writing these days?
I mean, you write for a living. Isn't it too easy to use the informality of blogs as an excuse for just being lazy?
The "walking away" by the perpetrator was not the "fucking psycho" component of the altercation. How sad that you didn't grasp that minor point of the article, Mr. Belonsky.
With only the preliminary information available from the link, I'd guess that someone may have been off their meds which could be the "something wrong".
@Ken Green: As someone who has always opted to self-medicate, I'm one who believes pharmaceuticals are over-prescribed and as a result, the consequences of withdrawal often leads to complications.
IOW: If more people opted for a bowl or a drink when needed, there wouldn't be so many taking daily pills and their bodies wouldn't be so far out of balance, when they choose to clear their heads.
Holy shit can you imagine. The hero put pressure on her neck wound?! That's insane. Properly applied First Aid is amazing.
Every time one of these school murders happens, a lot of people get all heated about gun control, but nobody ever talks about mandatory first aid lessons! You can't shoot a neck wound closed, yo.
College is getting strange. I'm currently going to SF State and we've had a series of muggings that have been pretty serious. The second week of classes an 18 year old undergrad walked to the local Shell, doused himself in gas, and lit himself on fire.
@TallulahSkankhead:
Not to mention Charles Whitman at the University of Texas, the Ur-incident of this type (I think).
Though there was no doubt an agenda in addition to truth-telling, some of the conservatives in the 1990s culture wars made a point of discussing inadequate safety on many campuses.
@Smitros: I don't remember conservatives making a point about campus safety in the 90s. I do, however, remember USA Today pursuing the story of campuses under-reporting crime statistics in the late 80s and early 90s.
@Smitros: I guess that begs the question: to whom were they in opposition. I mean, I guess I just don't remember the great liberal cause: let's make campuses festering shitburgs of violent crime. At least, not in any big sort of way, like, "we're here, we're supporting violence, get used to it!"
Of course, if by conservatives you mean "George Will," I suppose he probably blamed the 60s, aka, the decade George Will Never Forgave Because He Didn't Get Laid.
This should be a piece about bad science reporting. What the study shows is that there's a correlation. Beyond that, they know very little at all, much less what controls what, or whether some third unconsidered variable controls both.

Uh, any woman going to college? 35 of every 1,000 women on campus are assaulted, according to the DoJ. [www.ojp.usdoj.gov]
What an embarassingly ignorant post this is.

But again, I only have read the preliminary info.

I guess you are too young to remember Virginia Tech.

It was some of the conservative journals rather than pundits per se, I think.
But now, in the age of the university as moneymaker, there are clearly incentives to sweep safety issues under the rug.

The sample was pretty small, too - 94 participants.
