People don't have a basic human right to live in NYC. Give it up, people! Suck it up, learn to friggin' drive, and get yourself a nice apartment in the burbs. #jonahgoldberg
@Claire Keaveney: some people are born here you know. if they don't have a basic right to, you know, a place to live, do they have a basic right to some funds which will allow them to move? Or were you offering to pay that out of pocket? #jonahgoldberg
2006: a broker, unconcerned with his borrowers' ability to repay their loan, counsels a landlord that her property value is projected to go up every year so she should enjoy his equity now! The landlord, high on optimism about said property values, enters into an adjustable rate mortgage with a high loan-to-value ratio and buys a new car.
2009: the renters, who had nothing to do with the ill-fated transaction lose their heat and water before finally being evicted.
I don't know what Jonah Goldberg found funny about this story. But what I find ironic (if not actually funny) is that these deplorable conditions are a direct result of rent control, as nearly all economists will tell you. #jonahgoldberg
There's a saying that monetarist economists use about public subsidy: "Whatever you pay for, you get more of." That may or may not be true. But at some point you have to wonder what amount of public money and investment is "solving the problem" or "fulfilling the obligation" and what amount isn't. New York spends a fortune on housing for the poor, and yet there are still poor - but does it follow then that they're simply not spending enough? A lot of liberals say "QED tax more" but I'm not convinced that solves a thing. #jonahgoldberg
@Unsolicited Advice: Perhaps it's about spending money effectively. To wit, there are a lot of public/private partnerships that achieve success - and a modest profit for the banks and insurance companies participating. #jonahgoldberg
Goldberg and his ilk take pleasure in the misfortune of the poor, especially if those individuals live in a place Goldberg deems "liberal." He's another one of the shallow thinkers of the Right, believing in tiny government when it suits his interest, and then big government when he needs it. #jonahgoldberg
@justinis1badmofo: Doesn't he live on the Upper West Side? Like, grew up there? Fascinating to think of the psychology there, that he found the mostly liberal people there , and interacting like a normal human being with them, so scarring that he stuffs his face in a darkened room and writes crap like this. No doubt liberals are to blame for his utter social failure. #jonahgoldberg
@Baroness: I'm not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me. You see people who are just contrarian by nature, and their rebellion is simply based on being the opposite of what they believe their surrounding community represents, because they always felt like they didn't fit in, or whatever. Instead of taking that feeling of being "different" and being ok with it, people like Goldberg try to become "part of something" by being part of this imagined community that is diametrically opposed to the community where they felt disconnected.
Ok, amateur psychoanalysis is over. But still, Goldberg is a dick. As an aside, I think John Podhoretz is from the UWS too. #jonahgoldberg
This is a man who invented a completely specious theory that identifies 1930s fascism as a movement of the left. So I guess his sense of everything is pretty skewed.
And, no I don't think his "point" was that the poors were once again invented "rights" designed to make conservatives deal with their under-developed sense of public ethics. It's that the cretins who play the landlord "game" in New York often do so in ways that force people to live as do the poorest in, say, Calcutta.
What's funny to me is that, once again the U.N. is documenting our nation's slide into third world status and all the hyper-entitled "right" can do is laugh. #jonahgoldberg
I think the joke is that even New York is criticized for not doing enough to clothe, house, and feed the poor. Context? Calcutta? And where do the indigent sleep in Congo?
Then there's housing being treated as an inalienable right in the midst of a crisis created by a philosophy of home ownership. You're Entitled! So let's tax and overcome shitty market forces - which admittedly don't serve the poor - and build more projects. Which are great I guess!
We'll have the discussion about what to do about 17 billion humans in a few years. Hint: there will be weeping and shouting then, too, from ever more voices. How high can projects be built, anyway? #jonahgoldberg
@Unsolicited Advice: UA, I value your opinion. You're the king among the few non-Progressive commenters on this site. So, with all due respect, what is the alternative? Should we let the poor and indigent roam the streets of New York? Or, lest they blight our gentrified neighborhoods, ship them off to build shanty towns for themselves in the marshes of the Meadowlands? Would that be Malthusian enough? #jonahgoldberg
The problem is unsolvable. For my part, I'll continue to watch "Life After People" with something approaching glee as the planet warms and we pile more and more pyramid onto the pin-point. #jonahgoldberg
Isn't the city supposed to do something about buildings with no heat and/or hot water? I'm not trying to sound naive or facetious. Like, if you call 311, aren't they supposed to turn on the utility and worry about payment later? #jonahgoldberg
@sarrible: That's not how it works. You complain to your landlord, borough president, your local councilperson, assembly person and the DHPD via phone, fax and email. After you start crying to someone at DHPD and they tell you that you even sound like you have the sniffles - then they send inspectors to make sure that you are freezing in your apartment.
That doesn't get the heat on but at least you have a record of the complaint in the system.
A few days pass and your councilperson calls and says the Daily News wants to interview you about your lack of heat. You do the interview and this is what happens: [www.nydailynews.com]
And then the city starts calling begging to know if you have heat. And then your landlord sends like 20 men to the building to fix the problem and finally--there's heat! But also his lawyer starts harrassing you because oh well, you didn't have to tell the newspaperman the landlord's name and address.
And that's how you get heat and hot water returned in a building in NYC. #jonahgoldberg
Jonah Goldberg is an obese cretin and wingnut welfare recipient who lives with his evil mommy and has never seen an actual naked lady. That is all. #jonahgoldberg
