I really did not think Up in the Air was all that great. It's kind of baffling to me that it's getting such awards buzz. Maybe that's just indicative of what a bad crop of movies we have to choose from this year.
@Helio: I was interested in it because I really liked Antal's film Kontroll (and Vacancy was a pretty solid thriller), but not feeling this one as much (especially if, as you say, it's more a negotiator/stand-off movie and less of a heist flick..bleh).
@homoviper: oh, i haven't seen it. I was judging based on the trailer which devotes quite some time to the "new guy" trapping himself in the back of the stolen truck, presumably with all the money.
Why is Morpheus slumming these days? His career has been going downhill ever since his role as "Gangster #4" in Deathwish II (disregarding "The Matrix" blip).
Here's what I find most shocking (!) about this year. Instead of depending on journalists/bloggers/top ten lists to give them the slam dunk on who to vote for, AMPAS members might actually have to explore uncharted territory - movies beyond what got buzz/was popular/was a tragic biopic/was directed by Clint/starred Meryl.
They might have to go where no AMPAS member has gone before! They might have to watch little-known actors in little-known films by little-known directors with little-known DPs and producers!! They might have to actually consider the movies made in 2009!!! ... No?
Well... they might have to get off their duff and watch some of those screeners!! Yeah...or, uh, put those screeners in their DVD players before returning to their duffs.
Chicago started off with it's first couple reviews being tepid too before they snowballed into overwhelmingly good ones, so this could still go either way.
A problematically intense but not charming performance at the center...
This is sort of the definition of Daniel Day Lewis, is it not? Provided, I love his canon as much as the next person, but I would love him more if he could be funny. Like, at all. Or if he could be an ensemble player, and not quite so much a method actor de rigueur. Anyway, Dan--smoke a doobie, and I'll get back to you.
What aboutA Single Man? That's at the top of my list, but I haven't heard anything from the critics. I'm a bit skeptical about Tom Ford directing a movie though.
Well, there are 10 Best Picture noms this year, so it could still have a shot at a nomination, if only to fill one of the slots. I'm not sure how else they're going to be filled, though I think the NBR recognition for Star Trek and Up might give them spots, as the entire purpose of expanding to 10 was to include films that were critically acclaimed and popular at the box office in order to draw audiences into the awards telecast, even though everyone knows they'll never win.
I'm just hoping that the meh reviews on some of the bigger films of the year allow performers from smaller films to get nominations, which seems to be the trend, I guess, though I think Sam Rockwell is getting overlooked for his performance in Moon.
@hortense: Not to mention that the film overall was highly entertaining. I think the O-voters' insistence on legacy in the industry also garners a checkmark next to Rockwell's name.
@hortense: it may in fact be the year of the Sci Fi depending on how Avatar does. There are strong rumblings that thanks to that new 10 rule and utter lack of good films this year, Star Trek might even make it on the nomination list which if it did, Id bet a whole slew of art movie freaks would shit a brick over.
@Jim Topoleski: It would be a smart move for the Academy, though, considering that the three locks for Best Picture thus far aren't exactly going to pull viewers in to the awards show (though everyone and their mom loves George Clooney).
@Jim Topoleski: This is true. I think Up is a lock, though maybe, juuuust maybe, Fantastic Mr. Fox will sneak in there, as well, as people might feel like rewarding Anderson for a strong film in a genre he doesn't typically work in. Highly unlikely, but possible. I'm actually surprised the NBR gave a nod to "Where the Wild Things Are" instead of Fox.

Natalie Portman destroys everything she touches. The nerve of her trying to play Connie Nielsen's role!

I like how "the banks" are all the villian you need these days.

If there is one thing the Oscars does right, its admitting AFTER the fact it made a huge mistake in nominations.
