In reply to Jakob Lodwick's Attempt to Reverse Crack-Up As Obnoxious Crack-Up Itself
Suddenly, I feel kind of sorry for him. Also, uncomfortably similar - only without the whole Fameball / JA / Millions of dollars bit.
ADHD has got to be the weirdest disability going - giving and receiving in the most peculiar way.

I can't bring myself to watch the video and I don't know much about his Fameballing...but regarding the lists, have to admit I can totally identify. I do this kind of thing too as some kind of ADD coping mechanism. Get hyperfocused on my job (which I do at home) or my personal creative work (ditto) and have never been very good at establishing routines, etc. It's embarrassing, sure, that I have trouble managing the basics of day-to-day adult life, but I've been like this my whole life so I don't know what else to do but cobble together little weird ADD management strategies like what Lodwick is doing.
Anyway, again, maybe he is worthy of the scorn for the other stuff, and maybe I am worthy of scorn for similar efforts at time management, but I have a job (only recently cut back from having three) so just had to say it's not necessarily due to his being too rich for his own good.

@ThreeBowls: I do something similar to cope with ADHD, though much less obsessive and more general. My lists are not for public consumption though; no one need ever know whether I neti'ed or not this day.

@pony_express: @ThreeBowls: but don't you guys find that you keep up this list for like 2 days and then it fizzles? List-making is a symptom of ADD for me, not a solution (at least not at this level of detail).

@thebizz: @pony_express: I do find that it doesn't work over the long haul but it does sometimes seem to help reset me at least a little.
I thought that his making it public might be a way of encouraging himelf to stick with it longer, like some kind of anonymous-accountability-outside-yourself kinda blog project as many people do with diets or other lifestyle changing stuff. (Which I sort of just see as the internet version of going to a Weight Watcher or AA meeting, looking to a group to help you stick with a goal.)
I also have found if I can somehow harness some kind of creativity or game to tasks that usually arouse that kind of "I'd rather gouge out my eyes than do that" itchy ADD feeling, I'm slightly more likely to stick with it. Nothing is 100% but I just take whatever I can get to try to scratch out a little more productivity and stability...

@thebizz: I think OCD behavior goes hand in hand with some forms of ADHD. It's like over- compensating organization to help assuage the crazy.
Usually what happens is this: I have a huge project deadline looming, ergo my daily consumption of visiting websites like gawker increases, I take to cleaning the grout in my bathroom or going to the gym. Then deadline really looms near, I freak out and sit down and schedule out every hour of the day for the remainder of the month and power through with relative success. I also write compulsive lists for what I call "taking care of business" stuff all week long. Not on the list? Never gonna happen.
For years I didn't own a calendar, I kept all appointments/deadlines in my head. Life was a mess.

@ The One: The neti pot collects dust on a bathroom shelf. I consider planting a cactus in it every time I notice it; but that task has yet to make it on a list.

@DikkiAnjensen: I have a younger relative with Asperger's and his father basically has to post signs with reminders around the house to keep on track. "Take a shower" "brush your teeth" etc.

Although, I just now remembered that Jakob's bipolar disorder was "outted" by Julia on here last year. Bipolar makes sense with this too.

In reply to Jakob Lodwick's Attempt to Reverse Crack-Up As Obnoxious Crack-Up Itself
This post appeared on my dashboard last night. I was tempted to send Gawker a link because I knew that you'd have so much fun mocking it. But the more I thought about it, the more I am starting to realize that this absurd behavior may not be a plea for attention. Perhaps, Jakob is one of our generations true eccentrics. If he is as rich as you claim, he could easily become just another typical douche bag. But he has chosen another path. This self-indulgent behavior makes him seems like some kind of idiot-savant and maybe that is intentional. But I will be damned, if I am not amused by his artist shtick. At the least, I'd say that he is suffering from an extreme case of OCD with the to-do lists and the micro-management of his free time. Don't pretend like you are not curious about the actual meaning of Egosurfing. Ha! If fameballs like him were thick on the ground, your job documenting them would be a hell of a lot easier. I'm not saying that I'm a fan, but I am intrigued enough to go off on a tirade.

@valet_of_the_dolls: "Haters" is "people who are saying hateful things about someone."
I don't think people are jealous of him. I do think that people who are using Internet commenting as a form of therapy to work through whatever stress is happening in their own life by bashing someone else should seek more rewarding and constuctive forms of therapy.
Most importantly, if a mob assembles to ridicule any friend of mine, I'm going to be there to say that I'm glad my friend is alive. I'm glad my friend is doing creative work. I'm glad my friend is attempting to find the best way to live his life. I'm glad that my friend is making an effort to improve himself through various processes.

@FaceMelter: It's kind of sad, but plenty of us, freelancers or unemployed (like I was for two years between Valleywag and the infamous book deal) get caught up in such desperate job-searching or catatonic Internet surfing that we have to physically write down "Go outside today" before we get the importance of doing so.
