There is one huge gulch between "tampering with witnesses" and "innocent." The prosecution team often plays a better hand than they're dealt because (1) they have to convince dullards not smart enough to get out of jury duty beyond a reasonable doubt, and (2) the perp is guilty. Bracing up for (1) does not invalidate (2).
Was I outraged at Megrahi's release? Considering how my Mom was an adult education classmate of one of the victims (she was going to visit her family) and I got hear all about the grief of her friends and family, Of course I was fucking outraged!
@saythatscool: If you choose not to believe me, that's fine. If you choose to be rude about it, that's fine too. Enjoy the attention that you have just brought on yourself.
If he was released because the evidence against him was later deemed insufficient, no one (well, not as many people) would be complaining. But that's not what the Scottish government said. They said they were releasing a man convicted of murdering hundreds of innocent people on "compassionate" grounds. That is outrageous, and I stand by my outrage, despite Pareene's scolding.
Honestly, it's kind of ridiculous for you to mock people upset by the release of a convicted mass murderer on "compassionate" grounds. You seem to think that anyone pissed off about this must be a raving, Glenn Beck and Limbaugh-worshiping wingnut. You are so predictable. And wrong.
@Nic Fit: Again, if that's the case, I (and most people) would be fine with the Scottish government saying the evidence was bad and they have to release him. But if that's the case, SAY IT. Don't tell me that you're releasing a mass murder who destroyed countless lives and families to be compassionate.
Roman Polanski admitted to his crimes publicly. Susan Atkins did the same. How is that analagous to the disputed conviction of a foreign national in a terrorist attack? I'm pretty sure we don't have a shadow network of operatives trying to silence Roman Polanski.
Isn't there a lot of speculation that the bombing may actually have been carrried out by Syrians, rather than the Libyans? I thought I read that somewhere.
Supposedly the Syrian issue was tricky because the U.S. didn't want one of its Gulf War allies to look like a state sponsor of terrorism.
Financial advisory positions are not what you think they are. If you're a green FA, you're in sales. Your job is to sell financial products. Knowledge of finance is not necessarily a prerequisite unless you don't sound convincing when you regurgitate the pitchbook back to your clients.
It's sort of like selling televisions at Best Buy or something, when you dutifully explain that the more expensive one is better because of the pixels. It takes a while before FA's have enough clients and cachet to make financial decisions beyond hitting sales targets and recommending prefabricated portfolio mixes.
Ha! I used to work for Morgan Stanley. We had a former football player come to the firm after retiring. They gave him two whole years before firing him. The idea is that these guys will bring in clients with money, but it rarely happens. He couldn't close a deal to save his life. As for actually knowing about finance and managing portfolios, that's second on the list after bringing in assets under management.
@sloanish: why the fuck should you be allowed to trade on your name to get a job that you are uniquely unqualified for? trade on your name to be a morning buffoon on the today show, or to fuck a law & order actress, like ex-members of respectable ny teams do.
Yea, I doubt he will be making the actual calls on buying/selling, recommending/downgrading, whatever....
However, I am sure Chrebet's golf game will soon be very polished and that he will be a fixture in the new luxury boxes at the Jets' home games
The guy was a god to many tristate area white dudes; the prime example of a common sports fantasy (for white dudes): that with a little athletic skill and a lot of moxie you can get to the pros. Not true, of course (Chrebet was a great athlete). But whatever, it's a relatively harmless fantasy and rich wannabes will pony up cash to MS to hang.
Is it just me, or there something pathetic about this 11th-hour declaration of what we've all known for years? This reminds of nothing so much as a playground in which the bully is finally going down and all the picked-on kids are suddenly finding their scrotes and kicking him on the way down. Nice. Where were these US Senators when the blatantly obvious was going down?
Sneaky, sneaky, releasing this report on a Friday.
Much like the passage of the Federal Reserve Act a mere two days before Christmas, 1913 when everyone was on fucking vacation. Too bad blogs didn't exist then.

Besides Mohammed Ali on crack could probably do as well as our current crop of financial titans. That's the magic of the marketplace.
