Re: blowhards, ae38, I think that some people just feel any explicit choice that rejects food they eat is an implied criticism of their choices. It's somewhat analogous to religious views -- if you make it a point to tell people your religion rejects parts of their religion, they get sensitive for the same reason. Maybe not logically, or fairly, but it happens. Maybe that's why you perceive omnivores to be blowhards.
Also, maybe that's why you jumped all over Chillbear just because he brought up a nutrition question. You know, you assumed an implied criticism. So, it's not just omnivores, is it?

By the way, it seems obvious that it isn't just L.A. where some of the vegan food isn't really vegan. They traced most of the problems back to suppliers (especially overseas manufacturers of meat substitutes, who don't seem to care that much if milk or eggs make their way into the food). So vegans everywhere should really stick with good ol' beans and tofu chunks.

I may not be vegan, or even vegetarian, but I'm impressed at the dedication to knowing what's in their food. Hell, I'm impressed any time Americans care enough about anything to question what we're told to accept as a given.

True story: Heard someone tell a story about shooting a moose outside Libby, it was getting dark and they had to move. One remarked that he would have at least taken the head. I worked with these people and I didn't look at them again after that.
I lived next to a river and on my way home from work, I would pull over and watch moose graze the stream.
No wonder I fled that place back to the relative civilization of California.
