I don't know why everybody is so aghast at what some nobody journalist thinks about comparing Canada's top "Gossip Girl" with Sarah Palin.
Everybody knows that Canada is simply an unincorporated Territory of the United States. If they don't quiet down, the Obama administration might just appoint Palin as their new Viceroy.
I think a big part of the reaction stems from your point about the stereotype of America being ignorant of Canadian politics. It's funny if you're in the know, but we Canadians really only "get" the joke if we assume that you DO know enough about Canadian politics to know how awesome Jean is and how well-loved she is up here, and what a slap in the face it is to hear her compared to Sarah Palin. And thanks to the "Americans know nothing about Canada" stereotype on which you based the joke... it's not our first thought.
Not your fault for poor joke-telling or our fault for poor humour-sensing, just unfortunate.
I didn't know there were so many of them a-boot. Interesting.
Also, fyi, it's pretty standard for a Haitian coming from a wealthier family to speak Creole (spoken-language), French (school-taught/written language), Spanish (especially if they lived on the border near the Dominican Republic), and English (because it's the Americas). I'll give her Italian, though.
Well Macleans IS humourless. Canadian media figures and magazine writers are tired, boring, idiotic people who flop out rote opinions without any sort of style. Macleans really is a terrible, terrible magazine.
But on the other hand, most of us genuinely do like our GG, so we defend her. So I'm 50 50 here.
Also it would have helped a lot if the original post was funnier. Or, y'know... funny.
B) I think the disconnect happened just because Jean is the true hotness. Hearing her compared to Palin (plastic hotness??) was just too much for our delicate Canadian sensibilities.
you missed pointing out that canada's most active defender today on gawker is a hardcore fleshbot contributor. i am not saying this to poke fun -- i'm saying this because it is admirable to defend only two things, if those things are canada and porn.
Now I'm imagining Jean at a press conference some weeks from now. She is smiling, politely answering questions in several languages while in the background some gruff Québécois Monsieur stuffs a goose into a tin killing machine. She is impressive, this Michaëlle, really a testament to the nation of Canada. Meanwhile, the man gently twists, the goose not resisting, then flicks the butt of his du Maurier out of the range of the cameras.
@belltolls: You know, I made mention of the fact that my Mom's side is actually from Nova Scotia in a comment above, but I think I'll go back and add it somewhere into the post.
@squidbait: A college friend of mine from Deer Park, Washington once showed me a picture of the prom king and queen from his senior prom, with the queen holding a fresh-cut deer heart. I don't know if she ate it, but then, she was only a high school student, so there's time.

We're pretty cool, generally, and we love our hot seal-eating Governor-General.
