I think Dave is fair game among his peers for monologue jokes, but most of these attempts at humor fell flat. With the exception of Maher, these pretenders show their inferiority by their inability to be both funny and observant about it. In Leno & Fallon's case, they were neither.

@unclevanya: Fallon manages to fail in a way that is really unique. Just watching his monologue, he runs through the jokes like he's making announcements over the high school pa system. He still looks nervous and awkward up there. He fares a bit better when he's riffing off of someone he knows well, but he's still a bit of a stumbling presence. (Not in an endearing manner.)

Seems to me that the other hosts have to walk a fine line here. If their jokes are too acidic, the hosts can look like mean, jealous rivals. Also, by going after Letterman, they are going after someone who is, let's face it, the victim of a scary crime. Furthermore, I've been told by someone who knows him that one of these guys has had some unappetizing liaisons--not with staff--in his off hours. So the toothless quips are understandable. Besides, Leno hasn't been funny since the late 80's anyway.

@Trixie from Toronto: I'd say categorizing Dave with a child rapist and an incestuous pervert could be considered a tad "asshole-ish". Still the best- and funniest- of the three, and fuck Conan for his disingenous, ingratiating, "conspicuous by his absence" play. Syncophant!

I kid, Conan's been a marvel of quiet longevity, and always as classy as prom night.

They can't be tougher because they (and all celebrities) are all one ex-boyfriend of an ex-lover from the same thing happening to them. The difference is that Letterman went to the authorities and came clean instead of paying out, since it isn't all that scandalous anyways.

It's the hipocrisy and coverups and payoffs that get politicians/clergy in trouble. Celebrities? we're just happy when they aren't drugging and raping 13 year olds.

@La Mareada: What also should keep anyone from getting too tough is that though the women could legitimately have a claim if they choose, they knew about the relationship(s) before, so their position hasn't really changed.

While if society, the media or the other hosts were to go too hard and exact too high of a price from Dave, then the next time someone tries to blackmail anyone in the public eye, why would the victim go to the police? If coming clean costs too much, wouldn't it be cheaper to just pay the ransom?

Go hard on Dave and the blackmail industry will surge.

I thought Jay's jokes were fitting under the circumstances. They were very carefully written -- as usual -- to keep him from looking bad, or saying anything with the least bit of edge.

Although it was funny to hear him keep referring to "Letterman," as if the two former friends hadn't known each other for 30 years. I guess the bitterness had to creep in there somewhere....
