Really? Resilience? Is that what you call it? I do applaud the effort. When you're depressed, the most important thing is maybe to tell yourself that you're virtuous. That you have worth. Then eventually those qualities become true.
But the problem is essentially that this whole bipolar sadsack/egomadness schtick is just perpetually unhealthy. Sure Jakob's friends and maybe even he himself may THINK that he's trying to work through things. But working through things in public is actually just pursuing acceptance and validation. Anything done in public is essentially public.
If Jakob REALLY wanted to do something healthy for himself, and really want to make beautiful things, maybe he should stop making them all about himself. Stop trying to be a celebrity, or a brand. Be a simple person. Find a place where you don't need anything from anyone. A self-satisfaction. You'll find that the more internal reserves you have, the less things like being made fun of on the internet matter. The stronger you are, the less you're inclined to publish "guides" for being strong IN PUBLIC.
He simply has no basis to complain about being gossiped about when using his own identity as a mascot to seek validation. How can somebody be "too mean" when you're using your own self as fodder for art? If you were really doing it for the sake of art, criticism wouldn't bother you. Performance artists generally have the thickest skin of all. But if you're doing it for vanity, you're just exploding all of your insecurities without being prepared for the scrutiny of people who are examining you AS art.

Once I was at a restaurant in Little Rock and I had to ask what they recommended for vegetarians. The waiter, the manager and the owner all came by to see if the dish they brought me was good by vegetarian standards. They whispered behind their hands "She's vegetarian," and by the time I left they weren't even hiding it anymore. They waved to me and said to other customers, "She's vegetarian!"
The second time was when I checked into the hospital to have natural labor and childbirth. As I walked down the hall the nurse with me announced to everyone- and I mean everyone- "She's going natural!"
Those two experiences were enough for my lifetime, thank you.

Yes, his blog is self-obsessed and atrociously pretentious, but it is definitely not boring. I actually find his Standards project to be completely fascinating, if only for the obsessive-compulsiveness of it all.
His attitude about it is good. It works for him. Separate yourself emotionally and do what you do.
Now, Julia, on the other hand: I don't really know how you can say her fameballing has worked. Her business is floundering and has resorted to shilling for lame products. NonSociety has no content. It's basically an infomercial peppered with pictures of a narcissist and her dog.
You say she's on MTV, but it was just one appearance. From what I hear, it was an audition for that Downtown Girls show, but she was so fantastically frightening and out of touch on Alexa Chung. She's trying to cling to relevance and she's failing miserably. It is incredibly sad to watch.

He's like a housepainter up on a ladder, wearing short shorts in the summertime, who has one ball hanging out of his shorts and doesn't know it. And a group below the ladder is sniggering at him and he doesn't know why, so he keeps shouting down to them: "What!? What's so funny???" And then the group starts stifling outright guffaws and he says: "It's because I'm happy, is that it? You miserable people always have to try to take down the people who are happy, unlike yourself!"
Add then he snorts and and says "whatever," and turns around and starts and painting again.
Then his other ball pops out of his shorts, and then the group at the bottom of the ladder starts sniggering again.
And it just goes on and on. It's a cycle that repeats for all eternity.
