I don't know if that quote at the end is accurate, but it sure feels that way to me. Of course, it's nice to know I've got "friends" on gawker that are happy about that shit. Well, at least one. Enjoy, you.
Since Virgin was slashing prices to 50%, could you finally buy a CD for a reasonable amount?
It sucks that they're gone, especially since who knows if any store will pay the much-increased rent on the space in these times (Tower Records space on 4th is still empty years after they left). But I'm not surprised that Virgin couldn't keep the business model up. Charge me $17 dollars for a CD? Forget it. I'll buy the MP3s for $8 or $9 on Amazon.
@Cannot Find Server: When they closed the Times Square store, they marked up prices to MSRP and then marked down 20% (to start). So what was a $14 CD was marked up to $18.99 then down to $15. Yay.
Forever 21 is taking over the Times Square location which should complete Times Square's transition to a mall and Walmart was supposedly eying the Union Square store. Yay.
@pantsonfireliarliar: I heard Walmart was out and Nordstrom's discount store was in. Whatever. I just wish Target would get its head out of its arse and open up a Manhattan location. Plenty o- room if they took over both the Virgin space and Circuit City.
At least I don't have to actually work on my furlough days. That would really be shitty. Not that the 20% is fun, but at least I don't work when I'm not being paid.
Indie rekkids stores are actually doing pretty well, HamNo. Virgin closed down because their sweet lease came up and they couldn't renew at an as-good or better rate.
Last June, a Vornado executive told Reuters that the store would shut down in the first quarter of 2009. The decision to close the store appears related to real estate and the value connected to the location. That executive was quoted as saying that Virgin pays only $54 per square-foot when the market rent in the area is about $700 a square foot.
I pretty sure Union Square had a similar deal, and I mean...whoa. It's a wonder they hadn't been run out of town earlier.
Funny that the Times story doesn't mention the mandatory unpaid furloughs its newsroom is supposed to take this year. Guess the staff was too busy deciding whether to finish the story or take those two weeks "vacation."
"Unfortunately, many people in their late 40s and 50s may never get jobs again."
Or we get really shitty jobs to tide us over until we're eligible to retire, and then we have to keep the shitty jobs because owing to the fact we haven't had a decent job in so long, our Social Security checks, 401Ks, and other pensions are smaller than they would be otherwise.
I have to have a 2 week staycation. What am I doing? looking to work someplace in the 2 week time. I don't remember the last time I had a real vacation.
I suddenly wish I hadn't ruined my organs by enjoying my life prior to being laid off. I see now that no Chinese industrialist will buy these gin-soaked lumps and my list of salable assets has been reduced to zero.
