It is impossible for us to evolve or migrate to second life when we can't even stay calm driving to work.
Face it, as a human, you're naturally a self-centered fuckwad, dumb, and an asshole. The only reason you think you're smarter/better/nicer (and you're obviously not) is because delusion is the only thing keeping you alive.
Second life just magnifies this. And it shows sides of humans we don't see in real life like BDSM, furry sex, gay porn, and god knows what else. Second Life allows the normal obese, introverted homo sapien to show his true self. If you're on second life, I hope you get help.

Owen, Linden Lab execs have reported profitability at least since 2007:
Based on publicly known revenue sources, the company earns $100 million in yearly revenue.
I know you've visited Linden Lab since then; why are you reporting an outdated Kapor quote that distorts the situation? And what's your source for claiming education is its main market?

As an educator, can we NOT encourage the use of that phrase, EVER, please? It's the reason that my students, when they learn that I was in scientific research BEFORE I became a teacher, ask me things like "You know so much stuff! Why don't you have an important job???"
And to keep this on-topic... who was using Second Life? Really? Because I'd be considered an "early adopter" and I never even bothered to scope it out. Academia seemed to ignore it completely.

Oh, it's because they work for institutions that raise tuition on their students at double the rate of inflation and then encourage youngsters to go 60 to 100K in debt to get a social work degree so they can get out and make 28K?
That said, I loved my high school english teacher, so that absolves the rest of the bums.

Uh, and I agree with you that the state of our educational system (esp the institutions part) is fucked, but to blame it on teachers by calling them bums is the wrong way to go, buddy... wow.

SL is a "failure" only is as much as it is able to be a sustained "business/commerce/finance phenomenon".
Dismissing the academic potentials of SL is kind of..well, stupid and seems to be right in line with the sort of "thinking" that helped drive the economy to the pit it's currently in.
The things that escape the business/advertising/marketing/finance sectors' interest are often the most rewarding.

I would have bought some real estate there and created my own island if the surfing had been any good. There are a few places where you can actually get on a surfboard and paddle out into large virtual waves, but after an hour or so it gets pretty lame. They probably missed out on the thing that could have driven them to great success -- a launch pad for games. There is another start up out there which intends to do just that, only they plan on providing the planet earth as a platform for their partners. Want to drive your car and shoot gangbangers in Saskatchewan? You got it dude. Want to dance with leisure suit larry beside an Icelandic volcano? Check.
