A recently-anointed U.S. citizen by way of Canada, he personifies the lackadaisical "who cares" voting attitude that we attribute to young hepcats—although the non-ironic celebrations in Williamsburg last night proved that stereotype all wrong. McInnes, weighing in for all the cynics out there, was happy to let Pop + Politics know why he didn't take the trouble to vote. First reason: he's 38, and voted one time in his native Canada: "It was an empty vote. I wrote nothing in the ballot."

And also?

Voting’s lame. I don’t understand why all these people CARE. I get all these emails from friends and people I respect, urging me to vote and to get out for Obama. Those emails embarrass me. They think Obama’s different. They keep talking about “hope” and “change,” but all these politicians act like they’re at a karaoke session... None of them [the politicians] can be trusted.

But we admit he has a bit of a point on these last two things:

The idea that Obama somehow equals equality, the end of war, change and friendship is so childish. It’s the kind of thing people with Liberal Arts degrees talk about who never do their research.

There’s so much insincerity. These people threw “debate parties” to feel educated and involved. I went. You know what happened? They spent the whole time hanging out and drinking wine. No one even watched the debates.

Update: Tim Robbins Was Only Defending His Rights In His Polling Place Fit We had an on the scene report of actor and Hollywood liberal Tim Robbins making a scene at his Manhattan polling place this morning, yelling about "infringing upon his freedom to vote." Then the cops came! What had him so upset? Robbins told City Room, "The issue is that they removed my name from the voting rolls. My name was there for the primaries.” Which is totally unfair, he shouldn't even have to follow the rules because “The poll workers here know me... I’ve been voting here 15 years.” (TMZ has a video of a disgruntled Robbins explaining the indignity of it all.) After filling out an affidavit ballot and visiting the Board of Elections office, he's resigned himself to carrying out his election-monitor duties. According to a stalker, Robbins is "expressing concern to an election official about the old voting machine, shaking hands with a highschool buddies, reading the NYT and texting."

Obama Election Day Photo Op Fail According to Drudge, Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have taken "more than 15 minutes to vote." Maybe they're undecided? His link goes nowhere. Ben Smith doesn't report anything about how long it took Barack Obama to vote. Meanwhile: "HILLARY POLITICKING INSIDE NY POLLING AREA, ADVOCATES FOR OBAMA, 5 FEET FROM BOOTHS... DEVELOPING..." Once again, no link! But this is really a "fuck you, too late to not vote for me" move by the Obamas. Look who else voted at their polling place:

Among the other voters who have shown up to vote at Shoesmith Elementary School this morning, where Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., will vote: Louis Farrakhan and William Ayers.

He's palling around with a domestic terrorist and a radical black person! The real Barack Obama is revealed at last! It's not too late to vote for the white guy, America! Unless you voted early! Curses!

Hippie Corporations in Illegal Gifts-for-Votes Scam Tomorrow is Election Day, the famous American Holiday in which people are not given a day off of work but are still expected to wait in lengthy lines outside elementary schools during business hours in order to have their provisional ballots thrown away or watch their electronic voting machines helpfully select the Constitution Party candidate. Yes, voting is hard, and seldom worth it. Which is why civic-minded companies are giving people prizes for voting! A voter an receive a free cup of coffee from Starbucks, a free donut from Krispy Kreme, and free ice cream from Ben & Jerry's if they show up and tell them they voted. It's a great, fun way to boost turnout, and it's probably totally illegal!

The laws do vary from state to state, but for elections to federal office, our Congress is clear:

Codifying the ban on voter bribery, the United States Congress has prohibited the conspiracy to encourage illegal voting and stated that anyone who "pays or offers to pay or accepts payment either for registration to vote or for voting shall be fined not more than $10,000 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

And that's not just cash for votes that's outlawed there! "Not only is a direct payment for a vote prohibited, but any other 'valuable thing, to or for the use of another.'" Like delicious ice cream, which is very valuable.

(Note: we are not lawyers and honestly don't know what we're talking about.)

Voting Advice For the Cosmo Girl cosmogrrl.pngIf you need help in deciding to vote for, CosmoGirl offers a handy quiz—so you can pick a candidate in the same way you can decide "Which celeb pooch are you?" and "Are you addicted to gossip?" (Yes!) Sample candidate-choosing question: "What is most important to you: getting national health care, ending the war in Iraq, cutting federal taxes, or defending the U.S. against terrorism?" Remember, you can only pick one! I picked the most annoying answers I could find, and wound up with Rudy Giuliani: "He was named Time Magazine's Person of the Year in 2001... This socially liberal Republican is your presidential match!" Or you could go the old-fashioned route and just go with whoever your Dad is voting for. [CosmoGirl]

BREAKING: Lizzie Grubman Can Vote? Did Lizzie Grubman... lie? The celebrity publicist is a convicted felon, and New York doesn't allow incarcerated felons or parolees to vote. After parole, though, they're fine! They can vote any time they like! And according to a cursory Google search, Grubman received five years' probation for running over those people in the Hamptons. She was sentenced in 2002. It's 2008. So it seems like she could vote this year, if she really wanted to! Someone tell us if we're wrong here, we can't bear to imagine the possibility that Lizzie and Page Six misled us. [People] [Previously]

Happy Election Day! voteordie.jpgCan you feel the magic in the air, New Yorkers? That's right, it's election day! In case you forgot to vote on your way into the office (as if!!) you have until 9 p.m. tonight to make your voice heard. You're registered, right? And you know where your poll site is, right? Good! Then all you have to do is make a couple informed decisions!

First, you'll want to know what is actually being voted on. These off-year general elections can be tricky! And for some reason none of the local papers have any useful information about the ballots or what is on them. Thankfully, the Board of Elections has, on their terrible website, a downloadable candidate list and the always-exciting Amendment Ballot Proposal list.

Basically if you know a lot about judges and potential district Supreme Court justices, this is the election for you.

If you live in the Bronx, you get to vote for District Attorney, just like on Law & Order!
democracy!
Hey, Queens is electing one of those too!
he's a uniter
Hint: write in "Fred Thompson."

There is one ballot proposal and it is about a lake in the Adironidacks and though it's probably some corrupt Chinatown shit we cannot make heads nor tails of it, so vote NO. VOTE NO LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. Adirondacks for the Adirondackians!

Even Child-Rearing Women Can Pretend to Participate In the Democratic Process! momthevote.jpgCookie, Conde Nast's magazine for the hip, contemporary, with-it, sassy, stylish, modern mom, announced yesterday the launch of "MomtheVote," their oddly capitalized "nonpartisan political initiative" to engage moms in the political process.

"Cookie's 'MomtheVote' program, which has been trademarked, will include a series of "Campaign Crib Sheets," progress reports on the candidates and their positions on topics of concern to mothers throughout the year," says the press release, and they promise all sorts of offensive pandering, useless "nonpartisan" un-depth looks into the "important issues" of the day, and non-scientific polls on their website in the coming months. And though Cookie's website doesn't actually yet have anything related to the election, or politics, or common human decency, Momthe's can hop over there and Vote in their Kid-Style Contest, a collectiong of little people dressed unnervingly like big people. Do you like the 6-year-old Terry Richardson-in-training? Perhaps the littlest Diane Arbus subject? Make your voice heard! Vote!
