"Sorensen wrote her off as a kook. When he saw the kind of coverage regional and then national media had afforded Perez's claims, Sorensen says he was shocked. Like me, he wondered 'how legitimate news agencies could run with this story without doing any background checking into the source.'"
Giggle, titter, snicker, snort, chortle, guffaw, etc.
@SarahHeartburn: That's kind of a fallacy, though. The news is that there is a woman who claims to be the daughter of the Zodiac. Not that she actually is. It would be a much bigger story if it turned out that her claim was actually true. As of now, the claim was the only news, but it is actually newsworthy.
I'm all in favor of old media bashing, but at least the old media I read didn't actually get this wrong. Though it is possible some others might have, which is probably why I don't read those publications.
@Baroness: Throw the Hipster Grifter in the mix, adorn them all with house arrest ankle bracelets (oh, what the hell for Octo, why not?) and you have a partay.
I just find it hard to believe that a 47 year old who grew up in the Bay Area claims never to have heard of Zodiac until 2007. Beggars belief, unless she's an astoundingly dense, incurious person. Hm.
@Baroness: I grew up in the Bay Area in the '70s/'80s. Some of my friends' parents, when we were on hikes or playing in public areas, would say things like "careful, there are serial killers out there". So yeah, I'd agree with your point.
@Baroness: I think she knew of the Zodiac killer, but couldn't connect the dots (?!?)til she saw the sketch: "Perez said she realized her father was the Zodiac killer when she saw a police drawing of the suspect on television in 2007."
I'd like to see a picture of her father and also the sketch. Anyone know where to find this?
@Baroness: Yeah, it was impossible to grow up in the Bay Area without Zodiac Terror striking every halloween, with parents forming neighborhood watch groups, etc.
@DahlELama: Thing is, in the article I first read about her, she said she had never even heard of Zodiac. Ever. It wasn't just connecting the dots. It's like a kid in 70's NYC never having heard of the Son of Sam- her whole life. If anything, kids are the one who hear these stories, share them with each other to scare the bejeezus out, about a crazy killer on the loose in their area.
"As a young child I witnessed my father brutally murder several people, and have kept the horrible secret for thirty years of anguish and torment. But, no, guys. I'm totally sane."
@SarahHeartburn: You could tell she was trying to avoid the whole "recovered memories" argument, because she went to great trouble to specify that she already had the memories when she went into therapy, the therapy just helped her figure out what they meant or something like that. But yeah, it still sounds like she would have been pretty suggestible.
Mr. Letterese is probably full of Xenu re: his claims; however, Paul Barressi is one of the shadiest folks around, a former porn star and director of gay porn flix who famously outed John Travolta years ago. His employment by Tommy Girl rather boggles the mind.
