I hate to be a wet blanket but this is actually a very serious issue in health care. A dangling neck tie breaks the sterile field and is quite the silky petri dish.
Here's something scary... the 14 yr. old girl in this video was immunized with the live attenuated inhalant, but she was struck with the little alien robot virus anyway a few days ago.
Right, Rupe. Because if the New York State government -- or the feds for that matter -- were the least bit competent, you and your grifting, prison colony bred yellow journalism shitshow would have been run out of the US long, long ago, and you would have to content yourself with poisoning public discourse in Great Britain and Oz alone.
@BookishLookish: It's the new "Boutros Boutros-Ghali." Look for Letterman to make it a nightly (read: tired) running joke in his monologues. #rupertmurdoch
@daveyjonesisdead: Yes, the city is hungering for another general interest newspaper. Just ask the former employees of New York Newsday and the Sun. #wallstreetjournal
SNL dares make fun of him on some legitimate points, and that's lazy? I'd say it's the way he's not held accountable for major campaign issues, like transparency, that is the lazy. #barackobama
Also, don't forget Alex, that he has indoctrinated all our children into his cult and made them memorize Mao's Little Red Book. No mean feat for kids who generally can't turn off the video games long enough to masticate their predigested Happy Meals. #barackobama
@Mediahohoho: Heh. I love how ppl focus on this kinda illogical nonsense and neglect his real crimes; the continuation of the assault on freedom started by the Bush Reich. FISA, telco immunity, the patriot act... Gitmo is still open. The bill of rights is still suspended. Telco's will not be prosecuted for helping the government with illegal warrantless wiretaps, and those who committed torture and war crimes will never be brought to justice.
He's not trying to indoctrinate children to socialism. STFU. It's focusing on this irrational BS that is keeping his real crimes ignored. #barackobama
@Bruce Landwaster: Are you by any chance related to my ex-wife? Because she totally lacked any semblance of a sense of humor, too.
As for his "crimes," I sort of a agree, although the way I'd put it is that Obama is indeed neglecting taping together and wiping the shit off of the Constitution so thoroughly desecrated by the Dick Cheney administration. But I remain hopeful that he will address that regime's crimes fully. If he doesn't, I have no problem supporting another candidate. #barackobama
@Bruce Landwaster: If I were President Obama, I would deliberately commit the most egregious and obvious abuse of power permitted by the USA PATRIOT Act. Lemme see...how about putting Rush, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, Bill-O, Glenn Beck, and a few select Republican members of Congress on the federal no-fly list? Then I would go to Camp David and sit back and wait for the inevitable howling from the Epic Fail Party. Give them two or three news cycles while I say absolutely nothing, either in person or through my press secretary.
Then, I would appear on Meet The Press and reply to the first question (you know what will be about) with something like, "you know, I'm really glad you and I agree on this point. I just wanted to demonstrate in the most unambiguous way possible how the USA PATRIOT Act and other Acts of Congress passed during the previous administration enable the President to abuse power in a perfectly legal way. I'll be sending Congress legislation tomorrow morning to fix all of this, but in the meantime, the people I had put on the no-fly list will stay there, kind of as an incentive for action." #barackobama
He didn't actually "kill" the F-22. He just didn't authorize any more planes, but the one still ordered and/or operational will remain so. It's probably good to have a few of these things around, just maybe not hundreds.
And the real story there, which the Times covered in greater depth a couple days ago, is not just that he ended production of one weapon or another, but that he stopped production of a slew of them, and in the process has now reshaped the entire war planning strategy of this country, and put the military industrial complex on notice that they're not in control anymore. Even Bush wielded little power in that area when he tried, despite these people supposedly being his friends.
(I guess it's easier to say "no" when people are *not* your friends.) #barackobama
He's not off the hook yet. Gays in the military is a bug up my craw because it is about as simple and straightforward a progressive change there is. There aren't any new rules to make other than, "okay, now we won't kick you out" just to signal that he's at least going in the right direction. We can deal with the marriage and benefits question later. And what else? There isn't anything else to figure out on that issue. Why do we need to kick this down the road??
And that whole torture/FISA/Guantanamo/letting-Bush-off-the-hook stuff is no small potatoes, not only because it's just wrong and a total betrayal of his campaign promises, but also because REPUBLICANS/CONSERVATIVES/LIBERTARIANS/WHOEVER will use that shit against him to impeach him later. We know that "hypocrisy" is not a word that exists in the conservative dictionary, and they will be more than willing to take Obama down on the very same shit they cheered Bush on.
@taritac002: I get that every day that these stupid policies go unchanged or non-pursued is a travesty of justice in philosophical terms, and it seems like it'd be easy enough to just say "let gays in the military" or "prosecute the Bush administration for torture," but let's look at this pragmatically for a second.
These things aren't as simple as they seem. Changing military legislation would requite votes from Congress, which is currently embroiled in healthcare reform. Regardless of his popularity rating, Obama's not going to push both healthcare reform AND gay rights through congress at the same time, or both will fail and we'll end up with nothing. As for signing an executive order to stop enforcement of DADT, doing so will cost him potential support for healthcare reform both in Congress and amongst the general public; support for gay rights is not nearly as high as support for, say, the public option.
As for Bush, that will be even more controversial and complicated than gay rights; we would have months and months of hearings and a lot of dirty laundry will be aired. Needless to say, this is also something that would hamper the healthcare issue.
Now, I know he promised us these things, and I wish they would happen sooner rather than later, but I will wait four years before I decide whether Obama's reneged on his promises. While I think denying homosexuals their civil rights is horrible, I will focus more on fixing the problem locally, both in my city and my state, and hopefully that will help build support for when we are able to address the matter nationally.
I suggest those who support the 14th amendment focus on doing the same in their communities. #barackobama
@user_21938: @taritac002 was talking about ending DADT, not something more controversial, like repealing DOMA. Ending DADT has considerably more public support than the public option. (According to CNN polls 81% favor allowing gays to serve in the military, while 61% favor a public option.)
I doubt Obama's ending DADT by executive order would have much ripple effect. I do suspect that Obama has other reasons for wanting DADT to go through Congress rather than be done by executive order, I just wish he would say what those reasons were. #barackobama
@taritac002: Uh, no. There is this little matter of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, one article of which explicitly prohibits being gay in uniform. I believe amending the UCMJ would require an Act of Congress. In other words, sure, the President can sweep away DADT with the stroke of a pen, but what would go in its place other than the crusty old law DADT was intended to work around?
You see, it isn't that simple, and wouldn't you like to see Congress finish up health care reform at the very least before trying to kill that particular elephant? #barackobama
