Funny how there's no outrage about the 3500 rockets launched at Israel from Gaza, last year alone. Even during the so-called truce, that Israel kept. Hamas chose not to extend the truce, and even said they would continue to bomb Israel, untill there was no Jew alive. But blame Israel, why don't ya.
@podbaydoor: the truce that Israel kept? That's rich. Kept except for the blockade. And "targeted" assasinations and only occasional airstrikes you mean?
@podbaydoor: My point was: I want to you to say it. I want to you to say who started this, when and how. I want you to say who killed more over all these years (not who lobbed more rockets, but who killed more human beings). And I want you to say what is the only sensible way that this is ever going to end (hint: not by more killing).
You know, the whole "they're targeting us from civilian areas using civilians as humans shields" argument would be a lot more persuasive if Israel didn't have a concurrent and stated policy of collective punishment for people who live near or are related to terrorists.
Which is it?
If it's collective punishment then just go ahead, full steam and do what you feel you must do. But, please, for fuck's sake, stop with the rationalizing and full-scale defensiveness anytime these actions start and well intentioned people with plenty on their minds quite apart from your shared little slice of hell go, "ew."
I mean, we'd like to jump right into your pity party with you, sure, but we've kind of got a lot going on over here with our two wars and economic meltdown and the occasional natural disaster to contend with. And, well, we have always been kind of nervous about you moving to the neighborhood where all the neighbors hate you, especially since we've got a big welcome mat immigration policy for you (which isn't really true for anyone else but the Brits).
So stop trying to convince me. Do what you've got to do, but at least have the sack to realize that maybe it's time you stopped doing it on someone else's dime and paid for that shit yourself. Can't afford it? Guess what? Neither can we.
"You know, the whole "they're targeting us from civilian areas using civilians as humans shields" argument would be a lot more persuasive if Israel didn't have a concurrent and stated policy of collective punishment for people who live near or are related to terrorists."
The law actually says that civilians aiding terrorists to attack from civilian targets are to be considered terrorists. That's a fairly recent law, dating back to when Hamas first started shooting rockets at them from civilian locations. If we were to cut off funding to Israel, they would be at much higher risk of destruction; we fund them because it helps prevents another mass murder of the Jewish people.
@MrPhysician: What we're funding is the continuation of misery and bloodshed on both sides, because the funding isn't tied to any standards for fairness or human rights.
The only actionable suggestion I've seen here is to drop the Palestinians off in Iraq. That might work, but Montana or Saskatchewan or Iceland might work even better. Canadians, Europeans, you wring your hands more than anyone. Put your land where your indignance is?
I have two more.
1) Drop the Israelis off somewhere else too.
2) Level *all* of Israel, Gaza, and West Bank and create a new international zone with lots of museums and monuments and photos of dead babies.
Irreconcilable differences. Divorce. But nobody gets the house. Times up. When two dogs fight to the death every time they get near each other, you pick them up by the scruff of the neck and physically separate them. The country that never was -- filistin -- and the country that could have done much better -- Israel -- they can both live on the internet. Create a virtual fucking Al Aksa and a virtual fucking Temple Mount and let Second Life characters butcher themselves all they want.
@Ryder Ripps: Kindly explain what being ironic has to do with one's opinion of Zionism. Are you saying that it's ironic to be against Zionism? I would have thought it was just the opposite, what with strong political opinions being the very mark of the non-ironic. Also, the hipster thing? Dunno, there are probably some people commenting here who could be considered hipsters, though almost none of them would self-define that way. It certainly doesn't describe the first 20 commenters who come to my mind.
Or maybe you're just throwing around vocabulary you don't have much of a handle on.
What I mean by hipster is just metropolitan people who use the internet allot who are younger than 30 and may or may not live in brooklyn.
yes im saying that the most hipster thing is to be a jew and wear a PLA scarf and be anti Israel, get real. its like all the marxists left are rich kids, and all the squatters have myspace.
@Ryder Ripps: Congratulations, you just made broad generalizations about hundreds of people you don't know just on the basis of something superficial like, say, what they read on the Internet. And that's the first step toward dehumanizing people. And once you dehumanize them, you can do just about anything you want to them.
I think not being a self-righteous dipshit would be the perfect New Year's resolution for you, my deluded friend, and you can start by not throwing around a lot of judgments about people you don't know just because they don't agree with your politics.
as you try to decide someone you dont knows new year resolutions you say you're not self-righteous... you are a very angry person.
i have no politics, not once in this entire discussion have i said i am pro israel or hamas because im not. i dont give a fuck about any of them, i think they are all to caught up with ideology (like you) to know how to do anything right.
@Mediahohoho: Also, and this is from someone who makes a fair amount of mistakes when writing, but you should probably ask The New School for your parents' money back.
wow, as much as i love this site and read it, i am amazed at this post!!!!!!!! people seem to be forgetting the people in southern isreal that live their lives in daily fear of being killed by the thousands of morters that have been shot at their cities and schools for the last few years during the cease fire "Sderot has been pounded with several thousand projectiles since 2001. The rockets have killed eight, injured hundreds more and made daily life unbearable." [www.msnbc.msn.com] why does israel have to put up with it and not be allowed to fight back. they have tried a cease fire and Hamas ignores it. why is isreal not allowed to defend itself??????
@glewin: Here's the histry of "Ashkelon", a city in southern Israel, and the answer to your question:
"According to Sabri Jiryis, on 17 August 1950, the town's [Majdal's] inhabitants were served with an expulsion order and the first group of them were taken on trucks to the Gaza Strip[5] where they joined their fellows in the refugee camps there. By October 1950, only 20 Arab families remained, most of whom later moved to Lod or Gaza.[6]
The Israeli national plan of June 1949 designated Majdal as the site for a regional urban center of 20,000 people. Mass repopulation of the vacated Arab houses by Jewish immigrants or demobilised soldiers began in July 1949 and by December the Jewish population had increased to 2,500... Soon afterwards it became Migdal Ashkelon." Courtesy Wikipedia.
I'm no big fan of Hamas (and wish like hell that the state of Israel hadn't funded it at its inception to have a counterweight to Fatah) but I think it's becoming increasingly clear in this particular action that the ones crying like babies in Gaza are actually babies and they're crying because they're on fire.
@glewin: Check your facts. But I was pretty much under the impression that it wasn't about numbers (since the Israeli response is always disproportionately heavier than that to which it is responding as a matter of policy).
But hey, Israel always has a ready justification for doing whatever it wants in this conflict. Twas always thus and always thus will be.
@Mediahohoho: how many years of daily morter attacks does Israel have to put up with before it is allowed to respond? (going on 8 now) [www.israelnationalnews.com]
what is the correct number of suicide bombings targeting civilians before Isreal is allowed to fight back and defent her citizens? (140????)
@miasma-protege: I support Israel and I am far from a military Zionist. I am of Israeli heritage, and while I'm not that proud of really most things Israel does, I'm proud of Israel.
@MrPhysician: I mostly kid. We can self-identify in complex ways but others will always need place us on one side of the fence or another. So you and Peeps are both right. I'm just glad neither one of you has an extreme amount of military power.
@Pope John Peeps II: i think you meant militant. but, um, what's wrong with zionism? i could understand making an argument against zionism prior to the formation of israel and during the first few years of its existence, but at this point it seems kind of crazy. it's a country. i guess i could be against the existence of the vatican too, considering it's a crazy little autonomous religious nation that was created in 1929, but then where would you go?
@zombiefacey: Zionists, at least of the militant variety, don't simply believe in the right of Israel to exist, but seemingly in the right of Israel to absolutely dominate the region, including the palestinian population, by walling them into enclaves, denying them food and water, making life miserable for them...
Both sides need to make concessions, and Israel as the dominant power, needs to make more. When you're in a position where you can crush an entire population, your restraint needs to be far far superior to that of the terrorists you're fighting, or else you become nothing more than a vicious tyranny.
According to the Hamas charter, this sort of thing must come to pass: "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it."
Also from the charter: "The prophet, prayer and peace be upon him, said: The time will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews (and kill them); until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: O Muslim! there is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him!"
Hard to understand why they all can’t just hug it out.
Fey.. its me VirginiaIshcabibble... gee i guess you must be one of those turn the other cheek people. that works in small things not life and death. Continue to live in your safe, elitist bubble. There is no assymetry in war- you fight to win, but perhaps you didnt learn that. Question for you- Why are the Gazans starving and in need of medical equipment? Answer the "leaders " were focused on smuggling those rockets, arms, ammunition and fuel in to prepare to fight to destroy all of Israel not to govern and help the people and all the while sending mortars and missles in Israel.
Dont forget those nice peaceful Hamas terrorists are coming for you next because you are a non believer in Islam. Assymetry, how quaint, wake up and deal with reality.
@VirginiaIshcabibble: You are executed not for your politics (which are shitty) but for your use of the word "elitist," which needs to be buried under a mountain and sit unused for at least 50 years.
@MrPhysician: Yes, but that doesn't make israel in the right. There's no side here that's in the right. But Israel's CRAZY IN THE WRONG, and seem to now have committed to crushing the whole population of palestine into submission.
@MrPhysician: There is always blame to be cast on both sides. Some would suggest it was Israel's turning the screw on Gaza till it inevitably responded with a steady increase of rockets. There is no peaceful resolution to be found between Hamas not recognizing Israel and Zionists attempting to preserve their Dream.
@Pope John Peeps II: Say my friend pushes me and I punch him back and we engage in fisticuffs. If I break his nose and he causes me to bleed internally, we are both in the wrong, but neither of us is more in the wrong than the other; my offense just appears more visually horrific than his.
@wonky-tonk: Hamas is not terribly representative of the majority of Palestinians. Most Palestinians co-exist peacefully with the Israelis, but it is the fringes from both parties that unfortunately has control of their respective governments. Thus, each side seems much crazier than it actually is.
@MrPhysician: Say I weigh 350 pounds and am a world class muy thai fighter. Then my friend who is a paraplegic decides to pick a fight with me by rolling his wheelchair over my toe. I proceed to break every bone in his crippled, sad body with my immense muscles, while he is completely unable to fight back.
Sure nobody's right. Everybody's wrong. But there you go.
